Using moorings, CTDs, HFR, gliders, tow bodies, drifters, and models to inform ecosystem/climate studies, fisheries management, and oil spill response efforts.
Thanks to Capt. Chris Allinson and crew of the R/V Miss Leona, Shackleton the autonomous glider survived a harrowing Bering Sea deployment. The CFOS glider was taking on seawater and losing its internal pressure vacuum before it rendezvoused with Miss Leona on June 28.
New CFOS faculty Kay McMonigal and Steve Dykstra and research affiliate Shannon Doherty celebrated in Nome following the Arctic Chief Scientist Training cruise aboard R/V Sikuliaq. The cruise offered scientific sampling opportunities for early career oceanographers. #NanookNation
๐งต#NSFfunded researchers are aboard the R/V @sikuliaq for a special 7-day transit of the Alaskan waters.
In addition to collecting critical oceanographic data, the cruise is being used as an opportunity to train a new generation of oceanographers.

The spring @USLTER Northern Gulf of Alaska cruise on @sikuliaq wrapped up last week after almost three weeks of underway and station sampling, sediment trap deployments, glider recoveries, seabird and mammal observations, and mooring ops.
RIP Steve Okkonen, a valued colleague with a one-of-a-kind energy. Your friendship, wit, advice, generosity, and intelligence will be missed. The jokingly self-titled "UA Kasilof campus Fighting Barnacle's Chancellor and Janitor" has left quite a legacy.

Check it out! An article @alena__naiden wrote for the Arctic Sounder highlights infrastructure funding we are receiving from @AlaskaOOS.

PhD student Isaac Reister, @UAFcfos, led the Crave The Wave event of Alaska's FIRST EVER @SOAlumniNetwork competition. He said, "It was exciting for students to be on the @uafairbanks campus, exploring labs and seeing what kind of science is out there." @AKEPSCoR
Alaska EPSCoR, UAF CEM, & UAF CNSM are hosting โ๏ธ Science Olympiad โ๏ธ this Fri. 2/24 and Sat. 2/25 ! First time at @uafairbanks with students travelling across Alaska to compete in #STEM tournaments. ๐โ๏ธโ๏ธ

@KayMcmonigal@UAFcfos@uafairbanks We are excited to have you, Kay! We've been taking a break from tweeting so as not to promote the Twitter CEO's ideals but wanted to extend our best!
December evokes images of snow and winter, so it's appropriate that the Dec issue of Oceanography is on the Arctic Ocean! Enjoy our contribution 'Monitoring Alaskan Arctic Shelf Ecosystems Through Collaborative Observation Networks' as well as great articles by our collaborators.
On September 30, 2022, the USCGC Healy, her crew, and a team of NSF-funded scientists reached the North Pole for the third time in the shipโs career. A significant accomplishment for US science.

Weโve had a SUPER busy summer of field work, and the fun continues! With @NSF funding Pete, Seth, and Savannah spent their weekend taking oceanographic samples at the North Pole as part of the Synoptic Arctic Survey: https://t.co/aUf1cWyQGk Yes, the actual, geographic North Pole!
@c_bonsell@sarahamilton593 While spiciness isnโt a phrase we usually use, we donโt get โsaltyโ or โhotโ under the collar when other people do.
@AlaskaWx@uafgina @Climatologist49 @CIMSS_Satellite@UAFGI Very true! Just not great for ATVs you don't want to keep digging out of soft sand, and it looks like another round of strong north winds tomorrow?
