This #WorldAIDSDay2025 at the Kinyinya Health Center, we celebrated Rwanda’s resilience and leadership in the HIV response.
Communities continue to drive progress, innovation, and impact. Together, we remain committed to #endingAIDS by 2030!

What will it take to sustain the HIV response?
Working with communities.
Communities are indispensable to advancing progress, sustaining access and ensuring no one is left behind. That's why working with communities remains central to UNAIDS’ work, to sustain the HIV response.
Yesterday, RRP+ joined the 2nd Multistakeholder Consultation on the future transition and integration of UNAIDS into the UN system and beyond, held online.
The consultation brought together governments, communities, civil society and other partners to discuss the future of UNAIDS and, most importantly, what countries and communities need to continue the HIV response during and after the transition.
The discussion focused on protecting the progress made in the global HIV response, maintaining strong support for countries and communities, and making sure that people living with, affected by and at risk of HIV continue to have a meaningful voice in decisions about the future.
Participants also discussed the need for strong coordination, leadership, accountability and technical support for countries, while supporting greater national ownership of the HIV response.
RRP+ brought the voices of communities to the discussion and highlighted the importance of keeping communities at the centre of the HIV response throughout the transition.
As UNAIDS Executive Director @Winnie_Byanyima reminded participants, the key question should be: “What do countries and communities need from the UN to finish the job of ending AIDS?”
The transition should protect the gains made, avoid disruption to the HIV response, and ensure that no communities or people living with HIV are left behind.

Today, Rwanda Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (RRP+) convened a National Dissemination Forum to share and validate findings from the Community Engagement Monitoring Tool (CE360 Version 3.0). The project is supported by the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition (ITPC Global) through the Community Monitoring & Engagement for Transformation (COMET) Program.
The forum brought together 28 participants from government institutions, health facilities, development and UN partners, civil society organizations, RRP+ members and staff, and community representatives. These included representatives from @RwandaHealth , @RBCRwanda , Kibagabaga District Hospital, Coronum Health Center, @RwandaFinance , @RwandaEmergency,@RwandaYouthArts ,@Rwanda_Edu, @RTB_Rwanda,@RwandaGender , @giz_rwanda,@UNAIDSRWanda, @unicefrw, @UNFPARwanda, @WHORwanda, @uphls , @InterfaithRda , @rrpplus , and community representatives.
The discussions focused on HIV financing, integration of HIV services into routine healthcare, national HIV strategic planning, new HIV prevention technologies, and management of HIV service disruptions. Participants also reviewed community-generated evidence and discussed practical recommendations to strengthen Community Engagement and Community-Led Monitoring.
We were honoured to have Mr. Simbananiye Ildephonse, representing the Ministry of Health (MoH) and serving as a Quality Improvement & Regulation Specialist, as our Guest of Honour.
In his remarks, Mr. Simbananiye commended RRP+ for the work accomplished so far and highlighted the importance of collaboration in improving community engagement and the quality of HIV services. He also emphasized that the partnership and collaboration between RRP+ and the Ministry of Health will continue.
The forum also provided a valuable opportunity to clarify the ongoing data collection and the information being gathered to support the planned integration process. Participants clarified that decisions and future actions will be guided by real information and evidence from communities, rather than unverified information.
Importantly, it was also clarified that this process has not yet started. Once the activity officially begins, communities and the public will be informed through the appropriate channels.
RRP+ therefore calls on community members to remain informed and avoid relying on or sharing unverified information about the process. We encourage everyone to wait for official communication and verified information from the responsible institutions.
RRP+ remains committed to ensuring that community voices and evidence are heard, valued and translated into practical actions

Under discussion today, on the sidelines of #UNGA81 at the high-level Roundtable on African Leadership and Regional Production of Frontier AIDS & Pandemic Medicines.
#DidYouKnow HIV treatment can help people living with HIV achieve an undetectable viral load - meaning they do not transmit HIV to their sexual partners. People with a suppressed viral load have a near-zero risk of transmitting HIV.
In 2025, 30.4 million people living with HIV globally have a suppressed viral load. The target? 38 million by 2030.
Countries must ensure everyone who needs HIV treatment can access it, helping people stay healthy and preventing new HIV infections. https://t.co/8nmN1uZPyp
Community-led services are critical for key populations most affected by HIV to access services like HIV prevention.
However, the decline of funding puts this vital work at risk.

Viral suppression:
✅ improves health of people living with HIV
✅ prevents HIV transmission
But UNAIDS data shows that access to treatment and viral load testing still varies by region.
With the newly reaffirmed target of 38 million people living with HIV virally suppressed by 2030, we must ensure treatment and care services are accessible for all in need. https://t.co/8nmN1uZhIR
From 24 August, we have been conducting a 7-day HIV Awareness Campaign in Mahama Refugee Camp, Kirehe District. Today marks Day 2, running alongside the 4th Intercamp Sports and Awareness Tournament.
The campaign uses sports, peer education and interactive discussions to empower young people with accurate information on HIV prevention and testing, SRHR, GBV prevention, gender equality and available health services.
The tournament brings together 725 participants from 46 teams representing refugee camps and urban refugee communities, competing in Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Sitting Volleyball, Karate and Taekwondo.
We have engaged with health facility leaders and camp leadership, while also joining the football match.
Beyond sport, the campaign is creating a platform to promote health, awareness, inclusion, talent development and positive choices among young people.
Youth Ambassadors are also playing a key role by sharing their lived experiences with the audience, creating open and relatable conversations around HIV, SRHR, stigma and healthy choices. Through their stories and peer-to-peer engagement, they are helping other young people learn, ask questions and make informed decisions about their health.
