Representing the @UN in Brussels on peace operations, politics & peacebuilding, and counter-terrorism.
Driving partnership with @eu_eeas & @NATO & many more.
Today at the @EP_ForeignAff Committee, we had an exchange of views on the EU-UN partnership for peacebuilding in the face of global instability 🇪🇺🇺🇳. Multilateralism and investing in peacebuilding are clearly a smart business model in times of growing rivalries. 1/2

Delighted to welcome a broad group of Special Envoys in Brussels🇪🇺 today. Shoring up coordination and joint messaging on challenges in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
Productive exchange today with @UNISPAL Chair Ambassador Coly Seck and the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in Brussels. Useful discussions on the work of the Committee and the EU's continued engagement towards peace and stability in the Middle East. 🇪🇺
With H.E. Amb. Riyad Mansour @Palestine_UN (Palestine/UN), H.E. Amb. @DaylenisMorenoG (Cuba), H.E. Amb. Pendapala Naanda (Namibia) and H.E. Amb. @AmalJadou7 (Palestine/EU).
Despite the gravity of the challenges before us, it is always a pleasure to meet UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres.
We discussed a wide range of issues, including the wars in the Middle East and their global implications, as well as Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The EU will remain one of the UN's biggest backers.
Urged the @UN Security Council today to renew its support to the courageous @UNIFIL_ peacekeepers who stand their ground despite unprecedented levels of violence.
I also called on the parties to recommit to the full implementation of UNSCR 1701 & to respect int'l law.
Constructive exchange with @jean-pierre lacroix reflecting our longstanding EU-UN partnership. We discussed our complementary efforts in peacekeeping and reaffirmed our commitment to lasting peace and stability in Africa and beyond. @UNPeacekeeping
EUSR @jborgstam welcomed UN Under-Secretary-General @Lacroix_UN for an exchange on situation in eastern DRC. Shared concerns over escalating violence, incl. drone use. Clear & urgent need for a lasting ceasefire. @MONUSCO will play key role in supporting cease fire monitoring.
Good exchange with @Lacroix_UN on the latest developments in the Dialogue, the constructive and pragmatic spirit that made last weekend’s deal possible, and the need to advance on implementing the 2023 Ohrid Agreement. Looking forward to more discussions at @UN next week.
🇺🇳 Important meeting today with Jean-Pierre @Lacroix_UN, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations. UN peacekeeping remains one of the most tangible expressions of what multilateralism can deliver. The men and women serving under the blue flag deserve our full support.
We focused on two missions close to Belgium's heart.
On Lebanon and @UNIFIL_: peacekeepers are increasingly being targeted. This is inadmissible. The Lebanese government had taken courageous steps towards Hezbollah's disarmament, those efforts must not be destroyed. A potential exit of UNIFIL cannot mean a vacuum. Core functions must be preserved. Belgium calls for urgent de-escalation and a credible political solution.
On Eastern DRC and @MONUSCO: we condemn all attacks, including the drone strike that killed a French humanitarian worker in Goma. There is no military solution. We discussed MONUSCO's role in ceasefire monitoring and expressed full support for the mediation process.
Belgium pays its contributions to these missions on time and in full. Peacekeeping is an investment in our collective security.
@BelgiumMFA@BelgiumUN
I am deeply concerned about the significant escalation of hostilities and the risk for further worsening of the situation in Lebanon & in the region.
Only a political solution will bring lasting stability. We urge all parties to recommit to the full implementation of UNSCR 1701

The world needs the UN. But right now, the UN and its principles as enshrined in the Charter, need the world, too.
Speaking to the European Parliament today in Strasbourg, I called on the EU - and the wider international community - to stand up and support the UN by defending the truth, forming a cross-regional alliance to uphold the Charter and international law, and leading by example through engaging in the UN80 reform process.
