3/3 - Dr @amyepeden says more must be done to keep Aussies safe in the water, particularly in holiday periods.
“This includes extended patrols & safety measures on the days that drowning risk increases, but also consistent ongoing education & water safety awareness campaigns."
1/3 Safety experts are warning people to be careful near waterways and pools this long weekend, with new research showing Australia Day is one of the worst days of the year for drowning deaths and near misses.

2/3 - The Australia Day and New Year’s Day public holidays accounted for almost 5% of drownings over the 12yrs to June 2022, the research published in @anzjph shows.
Drownings were more than 4x higher on public holidays and were also more common on weekends & school holidays.
Researchers from UNSW and @MRC_LMB have discovered how cells regulate the quality and quantity of a key RNA production process, which is key to their proper function and survival.

3/3 “To make long term space travel possible we need to learn more about how low gravity disrupts our bodies down to our individual cells,” says A/Prof. Kate Poole.

1/3 Where is progress leading us, and how can we face this change?
The @UNSWCentreIdeas presents ‘Progress?’, a series of short talks from some of UNSW’s brightest minds, challenging us to imagine the future in areas from patient care to space medicine. https://t.co/Ft8QSJirHV
2/3 The future of equitable health care starts with collaborative medical research, according to Prof. @MichaelKidd5, Director of UNSW’s International Centre for Future Health Systems.

3/3 @VittorioOrazio compares the drug to Robin Hood.
“The tumour is like this greedy rich guy who takes the ... copper from the immune cells, making them weak. Then the drug comes in, steals the copper and gives it back to the immune cells, so they can become stronger & fight.
1/3 The survival rate for children with a rare but deadly cancer could one day be improved by adding an existing drug – currently used to manage excess copper levels – to their treatment, new UNSW-led research shows.
Learn more: https://t.co/FaAvWHcb8a
2/3 Researchers found a copper chelating agent could be used to weaken tumours and strengthen the fighting capacity of immune cells, increasing the success rate of a treatment for high-risk neuroblastoma from 10% to 50%.
