Powerful speech by Ontario Associate Minister Thevanayagam Thanigasalam on Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day (May 18, 2026). He calls for global recognition of the Tamil Genocide, international accountability for Sri Lanka, and the right to Tamil Eelam self-determination. Highlights Ontario’s Bill 104, the Brampton Tamil Genocide Monument, and the need for unified Tamil advocacy worldwide.
Thanks Associate Minister @TheThanigasalam. The key messages in this Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day (May 18, 2026) speech are:
1. Global Recognition and Activism: emphasizes that the Tamil diaspora needs recognition and justice worldwide, not just in Canada. He references local legislative achievements like Bill 104 (Tamil Genocide Education Week) in Ontario, Canada, as a precedent that should be replicated globally.
2. Tamil Genocide Monument construction and Continuity: highlights the significance of the Tamil Genocide Memorial monument built in Brampton, Ontario (with the support of Mayor Patrick Brown @patrickbrownont ) as a direct response to the destruction of the Mullivaikkal memorial monument at the University of Jaffna. Mentioned that a newly established genocide monument in Sydney, Australia, noting the success of the local Tamil community there.
3. International Justice: firmly calls for international legal accountability, stating it is a collective duty to bring Sri Lankan state responsible for the destruction of the Tamil people before the global Court for its crimes of genocide against Tamils.
4. A Unified Goal for Self-Determination: states that the ultimate solution for the Tamil people is the realization of a separate state, Tamil Eelam. He underscores that the community must stand on its own feet to achieve liberation, as no external force will hand it to them.
5. Collective Responsibility: closes with a powerful call for global Tamil unity, urging Tamils from Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Tamil Nadu, and Eelam to speak with one voice to pressure international governments for justice.

Canada’s first traditional black granite natural stone Hindu temple was consecrated! Proud to join the community in celebrating this historic milestone at the Shri Varasiththi Vinaayagar Temple. 🙏
I delivered greetings on behalf of Prime Minister @MarkJCarney
For the last five years, skilled artisans in South India hand carved each stone before it was assembled here in Canada, creating a remarkable symbol of faith, devotion, and cultural heritage.
Thank you to all those whose dedication and generosity made this vision a reality.

Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day is on May 18. I joined advocates, students, and other members of the Tamil community in Ottawa to remember the tens of thousands of lives lost and the many more affected by the conflict.
Together, we took part in a flower-laying ceremony to honour the memory of the victims, reflect on the lasting impact of the atrocities committed against Tamils, and reaffirm our shared commitment to justice and human rights.

We stand with the Tamil community in remembering the victims of the Tamil genocide and defending the truth against those who try to erase history. Brampton is proud to be home to the Tamil Genocide Memorial at Chinguacousy Park, a symbol of remembrance, the need for justice, and the ongoing push for accountability. We will always stand with our Tamil brothers and sisters in the fight for human rights and against genocide denial.
Today, we commemorate the victims of the Tamil genocide and honour the memory of those who lost their lives. We stand with Tamil communities in Oakville East, across Canada, and around the world in remembrance, reflection, and the continued pursuit of justice, peace, and human rights.
Today, we mark the anniversary of the Mullivaikkal Massacre and remember the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians killed by the Sri Lankan military in May 2009. The grief of this loss continues to reverberate through the Tamil community in Ontario and around the world.
We remember those who were killed and disappeared, and we stand with the Tamil community in its ongoing fight for truth, justice, and accountability.
On Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, we honour the tens of thousands of civilians killed during the Sri Lankan Civil War and stand with the survivors, families, and communities who endured profound suffering — including many in Canada’s Tamil diaspora.

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) and the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) have launched a new online database documenting individuals who were killed or disappeared during the deployment of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in the Tamil homeland between October 1987 and March 1990.
According to the ITJP, 10,427 unique named individuals have so far been identified as having been killed or disappeared during the IPKF deployment period.
