1971 के युद्ध के समय भी अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति निक्सन ने रूस के लीडर- कोसीगिन को पत्र भेजा चेतावनी देते हुए कि इंडिया पाकिस्तान पर कार्रवाई ना करे। इसपर इंदिरा ने रूस के एंबेसडर- पेगोव को कहा- मुझे थोड़ा समय चाहिए इस पत्र का जवाब देने के लिए। 16 दिन तक इंदिरा ने कोई जवाब नहीं भेजा। 16 दिन बाद इंदिरा ने अमेरिका के इस पत्र का जवाब भेजा। ये वो दिन था जिस दिन पाकिस्तानी आर्मी इंडियन आर्मी के सामने ढाका शहर में सरेंडर के लिए खड़ी थी। युद्ध के दौरान इंदिरा ने अमेरिका से कोई बात नहीं की।
