How do you keep a database fast when your application goes from thousands → millions of users?

You don't just use a bigger server.

You scale it smartly.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1. WHAT IS DATABASE SCALING?

A growing application means:

→ More users
→ More data
→ More read/write requests
→ More database load

Database scaling = techniques to handle that growth while keeping the system fast, reliable & available.

Think:

Indexing + Replication + Sharding + Caching

2. INDEXING

Without an index:

Query

Find data

With an index:

Find data quickly

Example:

Trade-off:

→ Slower writes

4. SHARDING

What if one database can't handle the data anymore?

Split the data across multiple databases.

Example:

Now different data lives on different machines.

Sharding helps scale storage + workload.

But choosing a bad shard key can create hotspots and uneven load.

→ Better reads + availability

First find the actual bottleneck.
