#Ethiopia: “‘War is better than famine’ has come true for us”: #Wag_Hemra residents face severe hunger amid drought, conflict
Addis Abeba — Severe drought, ongoing conflict, and entrenched poverty have left communities in the Wag Hemra Zone of the #Amhara Regional State at heightened risk of famine, with an estimated 90% of sown grain failing to reach harvest in #Abergele Woreda, according to local sources and a researcher familiar with conditions on the ground.
Residents and sources gathering information in the zone told Addis Standard that the worsening situation has affected livelihoods across the area, with children, older people, and mothers particularly vulnerable.
“Both day and night have turned dark for us, and we have lost all peace,” a resident of Sahala Seyemt Woreda said, describing the community’s desperation. “The proverb ‘war is better than famine’ has come true for us.”

New footage has emerged alleging torture and mistreatment of civilians by #Ethiopian forces in #Tigray.
The video shows a uniformed man, identified as an Ethiopian soldier, pressing his foot against a civilian lying on the ground.
If Ethiopia is committed to peace and stability in Tigray, it must ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid, uphold human rights, provide medicine, rebuild schools, and deliver the region’s annual budget. Actions—not words—will prove its commitment.
