When people argue about the difference between an LLM eloquently outlining thought vs actually thinking, describing emotions vs feeling, I think about the love poems I wrote when I was in highschool. I wrote extremely convincing poetry and stories about love and desire, despite having never really felt either at the time. For many years, I thought everyone was exaggerating, frankly, because it sounded pretty.

Now I know I have Truly Felt The Thing, because even if I’d never read a word about love I could write those poems.

During World War 2, Britishers were sending India’s diesel to Europe. This caused a shortage naturally and India switched to Kerosene as fuel to run trucks.

Kerosene is volatile and trucks would blast in accidents and collisions.

So they started writing “HORN PLEASE ON KEROSENE”.

On Kerosine eventually became “OK” and got placed between Horn Please.

बशीर बद्र की शायरी आपको हमेशा एक ख़ास एहसास में डूबी मिलेगी। उस एहसास को सीधे शब्दों में बयान करना भी मुश्किल है - सिर्फ़ उपमाओं से ही समझाया जा सकता है। सूखे फूल, पुरानी इमारत की गिरती दीवार के बीच से उगता पीपल का एक पत्ता, पहले प्यार में सकपकाया सा एक शर्मीला लड़का, पढ़ते पढ़ते सो गए हाथों में औंधी पड़ी कोई किताब।

अधिकतर महान शायरों के (कम से कम कुछ) कलाम एक तरह के over-confidence या self-importance/deprecation से गुज़रते मिलेंगे। ग़ालिब, मीर, फ़ैज़, अमृता, फ़िराक़ - शायर की शख़्सियत का हिस्सा ही है ख़ुद को दुनिया का केंद्र बनाना। और ये point of व्यू शायरी को बेहद ताक़त देता है।

लेकिन बशीर बद्र साब की शायरी अक्सर इससे दूसरी दिशा की लगती है। ‘मैं’ लगभग ग़ायब है और जहाँ है भी, बहुत हल्के से बात करता है, जैसे कहीं दूर से आवाज़ आती हो।

इसलिए ज़मीनी प्यार भी रूमानी लगता है और निजी दुख पूरी दुनिया का।

मैंने उन्हें बहुत छोटी उम्र से सुनना और पढ़ना शुरू किया था। मेरी राय में वो इस ज़माने के ऐसे आख़री शायर थे, जिसने शोहरत और मेयार दोनों को क़ायम रखने में कामयाबी हासिल की थी। मुसव्विर सब्ज़वारी उर्दू के एक बेहतरीन शायर हैं उन्होंने कहा था कि 'बशीर बद्र के शेर हमें इसलिए पसंद आते हैं क्यूंकि उनमें आम आदमी के ग़म, उसका अकेलापन और उलझनें ज़्यादा अच्छी तरह बयान की गई हैं।' मेरी राय में बशीर बद्र को किसी मुशायरे की वीडियो में सुनने के अलावा पढ़ा भी जाना चाहिए, उन्होंने बहुत अच्छी और मेयारी ग़ज़लें लिखी हैं, जिससे अंदाज़ा होता है वो ग़ज़ल के हुनर पर कमाल की गिरफ़्त रखते थे। मुशायरा वग़ैरह कोई कामयाबी की ज़मानत नहीं है, मुशायरे का शायर और उर्दू अदब का नक़्क़ाद, चाहे जीते जी जितना मशहूर हो, अक्सर मरते ही irrelevant हो जाता है। मगर बशीर साहब के यहाँ ऐसा कलाम मौजूद है, जिसने 1960 के आस पास ग़ज़ल की जदीद और अलग पहचान बनाने में अहम किरदार अदा किया है। (तसनीफ़ हैदर)
