Huntington’s Gene Enhances Early Brain Growth and Intelligence

The genetic mutation responsible for Huntington’s disease (HD) enhances brain development and cognitive abilities in early life but leads to neurodegeneration in adulthood.

A study found that children with the HD mutation exhibited larger brain volumes and higher IQs compared to those without the mutation.

These findings align with the theory of antagonistic pleiotropy, where genetic traits confer early benefits but incur long-term costs.

Researchers propose that the HD gene’s role in brain development might also contribute to its eventual degenerative effects.

This insight suggests that therapies should focus on slowing the aging process rather than silencing the gene entirely.
