@DBrownie23 When the ARWO messaged me at CARCAH that they were seeing "lightning...lots of lightning" and hail, I had a bad feeling. That is a signature of a storm that is rapidly intensifying. Never a good thing to see right before landfall.
@malkoff@53rdWRS@USAFReserve Kudos to the crews of both aircraft out there this morning. I was the person at NHC that they were talking to, and I can attest to how important their information was to the forecasters. Every hurricane hunter (myself included) remembers their worst storm. Today was one of them.
@FlynonymousWX One thing I miss from the WC-130H was that we had a portapotty bolted to the floor of the cargo bay. At least it gave you _some_ privacy!
I've seen waves, streaks, and foam patches like these from 10,000 feet inside hurricanes many times. Seeing them up close like this makes me _very_ glad our WC-130s brought me home safely after each mission!
@RyanRickert4@53rdWRS I always seemed to draw the overnight flights, but I'm a night person so it wasn't so bad for me. Sorry you had to do shore patrol the day before and then deal with an intensifying cat-4, but I'm glad I had experienced hands out there to work with. Impressive photos!
@pppapin I was working on air at TWC that night, and pulled that VDM off the printer, walked to the camera, and looked at it. For the only time in my TV career, I was speechless. The concept of a 2 mile eye was beyond me, even as a hurricane hunter.
@tornado_talk Guess I was a little quick on the draw - I see the post now! My mother lived in Quincy (just south of Boston) and recalled paper floating down from the sky that day.
Even though my career ended up focusing on hurricanes, I always enjoy the your posts!
@wx4keg@NWSDirector Congrats! While I'm sorry to see you leave NHC, I'm glad we will have a strong advocate for aerial recon leading the Weather Service. Thank you for your superb leadership at NHC, especially during 2020!
Tonight's Hurricane Hunter mission into PTC 1 has been interesting. The aircraft has located multiple wind shift at 2500 feet indicating small swirls. But none of them has been strong enough yet to become dominant. #CARCAH
From 2010 to 2021, 4 of the 12 Atlantic hurricane seasons featured missions tasked on opening day.
2022 makes it 5 of 13.
Is it too early to pull out my Airplane! DVD to rewatch the Lloyd Bridges scenes?

For the sixth time in the last ten years, our first tasked Hurricane Hunter mission falls before 1 June. But this year it's in the eastern Pacific, where the season starts 15 May.

As the start of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season draws closer, here's a good article from the Post on the Hurricane Hunter mission.
