Associate Professor @UNC in @UNCHPM focusing on the intersection between public health and nutrition. Special interest in policy and science communication.
Just yesterday I was with students from March For Our Lives UNC Chapel Hill, demanding action on gun violence at the state capitol.
Now those same students there are in ANOTHER lockdown just TWO WEEKS after a professor was shot and killed there.
Are you at #ARM23? Come by this afternoon to see @NCExtension and @unchpm poster on methods to reach and connect with farmworkers. Thank you @AcademyHealth for allowing us to share stories from the people who help keep our economy running. #HealthEquity
Ending today, the @theNASEM held 2 days of mtgs on #LongCOVID & the big take-home messages:
-It's FAR more widespread & complex than is generally realized
-Patients experience stigma from MDs & employers
-Doctors can't get reimbursed
-There is no standard of diagnosis or care.
This paper about the impact of #longCovid on language & cognitive function is frankly devastating.
A couple examples of how affected individuals fared when confronted with photos of objects & asked to name them. Lots of struggling & pauses. #MedTwitter https://t.co/sJgf83DHNN
On the Titan, five people died on an expensive excursion. Off the coast of Greece, perhaps 500 people fleeing poverty and violence died. The rescue efforts, and the attention paid to each, fueled a debate about the realities of class and ethnicity. https://t.co/z2rWmzXn8H
DYK that SNAP helps people put food on the table? SNAP plays a critical role in reducing hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. SNAP improves family security, child and adult health, employment, and other outcomes. #SNAPMatters

They contended that children were at no risk. Tell that to 1600+ children who have died, 14,000+ hospitalized, 9,000+ with MIS-C, and the mounting number of children experiencing post- and long-covid effects. And don't forget the 245,000+ who lost parents.

This is terrible and awful. 25% Long-COVID in children and adolescents.
My go-to study for children was 4.8%. Early in the pandemic adult studies showed very high rates of Long-COVID. But unvaccinated populations. We haven't been vaccinating children.

“They have prioritized tax cuts for corporations and wealthy North Carolinians over funding working families’ education,” Hunt said. “They have shown us who they are and what they value.” #ncpol

Anti-LGBTQ conservatives see reports of children being abused in the Catholic Church, the Southern Baptist Convention, the Boy Scouts of America, and by numerous GOP politicians, and they think:
"You know what kids need protection from? Shirts with rainbows on them at Target."
