Why we need the #ESHIA Bill
Increased mining activity is accelerating the destruction of Nigeria’s environment and ecosystems and with it, the livelihoods of mining communities. We need stronger environmental governance.
From Zamfara to Ebonyi, increased mining activity is not only damaging ecosystems but also undermining the health, livelihoods, and future of local populations. These communities are being left behind with irreversible environmental harm.
What’s missing? Strong environmental governance that ensures accountability, proper assessment of impacts, and community protection BEFORE projects begin.
The #ESHIA Bill is a vital step forward for transparency and accountability.

#Nigeria in 2017 had an estimated 1,200 identified abandoned mining sites where mining activities ceased without proper closure or reclamation and continue to degrade the environment and pose physical dangers in the form of weakened and collapsing mine shafts, sinkholes, and water-filled pits.
