The students are not confused, Narrative around them is.

Students have shown greater institutional wisdom than the institution itself. They demanded an impartial investigation while IIT Bombay initially presented an allegation as fact and later apologised for doing so.

Students are demanding truth, accountability and due process.

Respect their agency. Respect their intelligence.

One of the biggest problems surrounding #Casteism in India is the glorification of textbook education by privileged communities that refuse to see the interconnection between outsourced physical work performed for centuries by other communities as a result of a social order and their indirect nurture that shaped their own "merit". Those who wax eloquent about value chains in their much flaunted MBAs do not see themselves as the product of a social value chain architected as a hierarchy of glass ceilings and iron walls.
Notably, caste has not been sufficiently deconstructed in the mainstream discourse inspite of a rain of PhDs on the subject. A Freudian truth is that casteism extends to the country's intellectual process in which interdisciplinary thinking, like intercaste marriage, is frowned upon.

भारत के प्रीमियम संस्थानों में 90% से अधिक प्रोफेसर पदों पर तथाकथित ‘मेरिटधारियों’ का कब्ज़ा है। लेकिन जब वैश्विक स्तर पर रिसर्च और अकादमिक प्रतिस्पर्धा की बात आती है, तो यही ‘मेरिट’ अचानक सुषुप्त अवस्था में चली जाती है।

आख़िर ये कैसी मेरिट है, जो नौकरी और प्रमोशन पाने तक ही दिखाई देती है और उसके बाद दुनिया से प्रतिस्पर्धा करने के समय गायब हो जाती है?

Privilege becomes invisible when it is treated as the default. Marginalisation is what remains once that default is locked in as “normal.”

The more useful move for intellectuals, academics and journalists who come from dominant caste backgrounds is therefore not to keep producing knowledge about marginalised communities, but to turn the analytical lens onto the structures, cultures, and everyday practices of privilege itself—examining how dominance is maintained, naturalised, and reproduced.

In short: stop explaining the margins and start explaining the centre.
