#BNP and PM #TariqueRahman have demonstrated their true “commitment” to #democracy by endorsing the Interim Govt’s deeply controversial decision to effectively ban one of the largest political parties in #Bangladesh through legally flawed amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.

Today, under a proposal by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, the BNP-majority #parliament passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance Bill 2026. This legislation ratifies provisions originally introduced by the Interim Govt, granting the executive sweeping powers to suspend the activities of any organization indefinitely. It also prohibits all forms of support for such proscribed entities.

The provisions were previously used by the Interim Govt to impose a de-facto ban on the #AwamiLeague. The newly passed law goes even further by introducing penalties for violations, thereby entrenching and expanding the IG’s restrictions.

This decision runs counter to the recommendations of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, @volker_turk, several independent experts from the @UN_HRC , as well as numerous international and national human rights and civil society organizations.

By aligning itself with the Yunus Regime’s undemocratic position on the arbitrary banning of political parties, BNP has undermined its own credibility in advocating for democratic principles and has forfeited the moral high ground to critique other parties and their stance on democracy, including the Awami League.

This marks a deeply troubling moment for #democracy in Bangladesh, with potentially far-reaching and destabilizing consequences for the country’s political landscape.

Bagerhat Tragedy the Cruelest Moment in Bangladesh History under Yunus

Jewel Hasan Saddam, President of the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League, remains jailed on what many describe as fabricated charges-just one of many currently languishing in arbitrary detention.

For 11 months, his 22-year-old wife, Kaniz Suborna Swarnali, exhausted every avenue to secure his release. Driven to emotional devastation by the mounting injustice, she tragically took her own life and that of their only child.

In a move reminiscent of the world's most heartless regimes, the Bangladesh authorities denied Saddam parole to attend the funeral. Instead of a proper goodbye at their burial, he was granted only a few hurried minutes at the jail gate to witness the caskets of his entire family.

And that very individual is in fact, very dear to the people of Gopalganj, that specific area. There's also no denying that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was an integral part of Bangladesh's independence.

So, if you are confidently saying 'there is no place for such violence in Bangladesh, then you must act to ensure no one engages in any such act that provokes violence.

The four people who lost their lives yesterday will not resurrect because of the rhetoric of a few over-enthused 'young citizens'. Their families will be scarred forever.

So, when you say violence has no place in the nation and such brutality will face justice, ensure you act without any bias.

Evidence of cold-blooded #murder by law enforcers in #Gopalganj? Video shows uninjured person in police custody dying of gunshot wounds moments later.

One of the five people dead so far from the recent firing on protesters by police and army in Gopalganj was 18 year old Ramzan Kazi. Hailing from Harinahat Village of Kotalipara Upazila, Ramzan was a handyman by trade and the sole bread-earner of his family. His death has brought despair to his entire family, especially his mother who has been silenced completely by the tragedy. See🔽

However, even tragic is the circumstances of the 18 y/o youth's death, with video footage suggesting cold blooded murder by law enforcers and not death by random firing. The attached video is 5.05 mins long. For the first 3.41 mins, Ramzan can be seen in police custody, being slapped around and manhandled.

He is then taken by the police away from the media present on the scene with cameras. From 3.42 mins, another footage shows Ramzan's bullet-ridden body being taken towards the hospital. The people taking him are clearly saying that he has been shot by the law enforcers/armed forces.

Naturally, the question arises, was Ramzan killed in cold blood by the police officials in whose custody he was detained?

If not, how did someone clearly "detained" by the law enforcers turn up dead with bullet wounds moments later?

Is this a case of a cold-blooded encounter-killing by a clearly trigger-happy police force who know they are beyond accountability as long as the victims are actually, or perceived to be, associated with the #AwamiLeague?

This is yet another reason why the events of July 16 2025, and those preceding and following them, cannot credibly be investigated by the Interim Govt-formed three member committee led by the Home Secretary (of all people). What is required is independent investigatigations by a judicial inquiry aided by human rights experts.

This is why an independent judicial inquiry is required to find out the truth and ensure accountability for the extra judicial killings at the hands of law enforcement and armed forces in #Gopalganj:

- So far, five people have died with bullet injuries in the recent #violence in #Gopalganj;

- The police have not prepared any inquest reports into the deaths;

- No autopsies were carried out on the first four victims who were buried or cremated as per their religious beliefs without any assessment of their causes of deaths;

- The families of all the victims claim that the corpses showed clear evidence of gunshot/bullet wounds;

- The hospital has not issued any death certificates for the victims, although hospital sources confirmed to nat’l media that all the victims exhibited signs of gunshot/bullet injuries;

- Despite the passage of more than 48 hours, no cases have been filed regarding any of the deaths.

These are clear indications that the Muhammad #Yunus led Interim Govt is not at all interested to ensure accountability for the deaths of five unarmed protesters (so far). In fact, these are also signs are of an organised cover up sanctioned at the highest levels.

Therefore, what is required is a high-powered independent judicial inquiry headed by at least a Supreme Court judge and comprising of neutral human rights lawyers/experts who will not only look at the deaths but all the events of 16 July 2025, along with those which preceded and followed it.

Will those who have always been vocal about human rights in #Bangladesh under the previous govt do the same now?

Will those who show steadfast support for the“reforms” of the Yunus Govt also be equally steadfast in calling for “justice”?

Will they join the call for an independent inquiry?
