Let's be honest here. A lot of the frenzy about the pied-a-terre tax list is not on behalf of helpless little old ladies.

It's coming from people who have been defrauding NYC by pretending not to be residents for income tax purposes.

Now those people have to choose. Income tax or pied-a-terre? Do you live here or not?

Just one story I heard today—a landlord allowed a small biz owner to spend $800k outfitting her restaurant, then kicked her out bc he can now ask more for the space.

Local businesses are the heart of our city. We must pass Small Business Rent Stabilization so they can stay.

Sigh. No. Unfortunately, undocumented people do not collect any SNAP or HEAP. They pay taxes (Billions of dollars) but do not get social benefits. There is also very very little fraud of social benefit systems. In fact, most errors are administrative. So to correct you, actually folks are getting SNAP and HEAP at the expense of poor undocumented people.

@DBYankees1 Our country literally runs on the labor of undocumented people. We make it nearly impossible for certain people to become documented in order to exploit them for labor. They also pay into our tax system.

The list reported is a state-mandated list of residential properties drawn from information already published in the annual final property tax roll.

DOF is reviewing that list to determine which properties may be subject to the additional tax.

DOF already has everyone’s property tax info.

A simple form to fill out is all the state is asking….but I’m sure my guy here also firmly believes that all social benefits programs should have very firm asset limits and people have to prove with endless documentation that they need that extra 12 dollars of SNAP or HEAP.

Last week, my mom got a "pied-a-terre" tax notice. She has lived full-time in her townhouse FOR 30 YEARS (she and my dad bought it for under $1 million). She has no other residence.

Is NYC not bothering with basic checking of its own tax lists?

She's 81 and has three weeks to get her name off the list or she owes $56,000. (Yes, I said I'd help.)
