Dozens of German and Austrian scientists, artists, and intellectuals sought refuge from the Nazi regime in Turkey. Many of them were Jewish or married to Jews. One of the forgotten stories of WWII.
During the war Polish diplomat Wojciech Rychlewicz saved many Jewish refugees by issuing life-saving visas from Istanbul. Other Turkish cities as well housed various charity and international aid organizations that assisted many who were seeking refuge from Nazi occupied Europe.
