From that point on, Corky’s journey was nothing short of a nightmare. She was placed in a truck and sent on a long, terrifying journey to the now-defunct Marineland of the Pacific. Tiny tanks and foreign noises of the human world were her new reality. Later, she was transferred to SeaWorld, the company that still holds her captive in a tank for “entertainment” today.

Of the 13 members of her pod captured between 1968 and 1969, Corky is the sole survivor. Her resilience and spirit have seen her endure the longest captivity of any wild-captured orca. Her story is a testament to the strength of the orca spirit, a poignant reminder of the bonds of family, and a call to reflect on the impact of our actions on the natural world.

Overnight, the orcas’ peaceful sanctuary turned into a scene of chaos and despair. Six young orcas were snatched from their ocean home, their haunting cries likely echoing across the harbor as they were torn from their mothers' sides. Among them was Corky, a young and spirited orca, whose bond with her family was now shattered. The mothers' desperate calls and the calves' frightened squeals painted a picture of heartbreak and loss, as the orcas were hoisted out of the water with metal cranes.

On the stormy night of December 11, 1969, as the waves crashed against the shores off the coast of British Columbia, a heart-wrenching tale began to unfold. Corky’s A5 pod, a close-knit family of orcas, swam into Pender Harbour, possibly seeking shelter from the rough weather, unaware of the threat lurking nearby. With the storm as their cover, humans in boats surrounded the family, casting their nets with malicious intent.
