Our new publication in @RoySocChem@LabonaChip Journal introduces the OcclusionChip, a clinical microfluidic platform designed to replicate sickle cell disease-associated microvascular occlusions under chemically induced hypoxia. The study systematically evaluates the efficacy of anti-sickling therapies, demonstrating significant reductions in red cell mediated occlusions, thus advancing the development and testing of targeted therapeutic strategies in the lab.

I am happy to share a new open-access article from our lab, just published in @analystrsc: "Rapid measurement of hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation by leveraging Bohr effect and Soret band bathochromic shift"
‼️ Despite its vital role in human physiology, hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation measurement is underutilized in basic research and in clinical laboratories, primarily due to the technical complexity and limited throughput of existing methods.
👉 We present a rapid hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation measurement approach to screen for and detect hemoglobin-oxygen affinity abnormalities and to evaluate the function and efficacy of hemoglobin-modifying therapies within minutes.
👉 We anticipate this method's broad adoption will democratize the diagnosis and prognosis of hemoglobin disorders, such as #sicklecelldisease.
👉 This method has the potential to transform the research and development of new targeted and genome-editing-based therapies that aim to modify or improve hemoglobin-oxygen affinity.
Kudos to @ZoeSekyonda, PhD candidate in our lab, who has led this highly complex and challenging project for many years. @CWRUBME@CaseEngineer@cwru
Initial successful validation of the technology was achieved at @cwru and @UHhospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, and at @JcrcUganda in Kampala, Uganda, where Zoe is from.
I would like to thank @nih_nhlbi @NIBIBgov and @ASH_hematology for supporting Zoe and this project.
