SEATO gave us a seat beside big powers. CENTO brought many cents of US aid—but neither gave us dependable security. The risks ultimately exceeded the rewards.

Now we have joined the Pakistan–Türkiye–Saudi pact: PTS—which is not even a proper acronym.

If Egypt joins, it will become the (Trump)-PETS Pact. If Syria, which was informally very active in last NATO mtg, follows, it will be the (Trump)-PESTS PACT—both names reflective of their autocratic regimes rather than their peoples or countries.

But the risks may again exceed the rewards: entanglement in other states’ wars without assured protection against Pakistan’s own threats.

The pact the region actually needs is one capable of restraining US–Israeli aggression: Pakistan, Iran, Egypt, Türkiye and Yemen--The PIETY Pact—a better acronym; a better purpose.
