a rook can move across the whole board in each dimension, so that's 8n-1 legal moves

a king can move to either the faces or the vertices of the surrounding hypercube, so that's 2n+2^n

@vivian39_ why is throughput the optimisation target? the more valuable metric is how quickly you *can* get through. saving time for walkers is more important than saving time for standers—if the latter cared about speed, they would be walkers!
