Today I was asked by a pastor of a church plant what, as a counselor, I think people really want and need from their pastor. What are they actually looking for?

Pastor, your people want to be wanted, loved, and known apart from their performance and usefulness. They want to be genuinely cared for because you love them, not because you have something you need from them for your ministry.

Whether it’s a staff member, a ministry volunteer, or a six-year-old running around after the service, people need your genuine love and care. They crave that same love that spills over from the love you yourself received from Christ, apart from your performance.

So many people I’ve talked with feel that church leadership only noticed or tried to care for them when they could get something from them. They felt seen only when they were useful or being groomed for a ministry role, their wallet, or something else the pastor needed.

Some experienced this through sickness or old age, when they could no longer participate like they once did and they ceased to exist to the church.

Others discovered it when their marriages or children were struggling and they reached out for help, only to be told to see a therapist, with no follow-up and no further care from church leadership.

Still others managed to get on their pastor’s calendar for a meeting but were painfully aware that they were simply the pastor’s “11:30” rather than a person to be known and loved.

Far too many have felt it keenly when they watched their pastors quickly pivot time and attention when someone else showed up with more talent and potential.

Your people need your genuine love - not your conditional care based on performance or usefulness!

Oh, by the way...guess what your pastor would desire from you? To be loved and wanted by his church, not just because of his performance and title as "pastor." Do you only reach out when he is useful or do you care about HIM and his family?

I am deeply thankful that God loves me even when I’m not useful and I am so grateful for my own pastors in my life who have modeled this kind of love well! May this same love overflow into all of our relationships as we seek to live out the Gospel together.

On this fifth anniversary of January 6th, I wanted to pass along remarks I made about that fateful day at the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award ceremony last year.

I first spoke about the men and women in uniform- the true heroes that day; how I will always believe that, by God’s grace, I did my duty to see to the peaceful transfer of power under the Constitution and I expressed my heartfelt gratitude to the countless Americans of every background who have reached out with a word of encouragement these past five years.

January 6 was a tragic day but it became a triumph of freedom when, after Capitol Police quelled the violence, leaders in both chambers in both political parties reconvened the very same day and finished democracy’s work under the Constitution.

The Constitution is the common ground on which we stand. In these divided times, I believe more than ever that on that common ground we will forge a boundless future together and America’s best days are yet to come.

So Help Us God.
