#Topic: Dry & hot week likely to bring record breaking temperatures in July

==> El Nino continues to strengthen over the Pacific Ocean and has now started coupling with the atmosphere. As a result, clear suppressive conditions have evolved over the Indian Ocean.

==> Consequently, the Southwest Monsoon has taken a pause, with dry winds clearly dominating the monsoon core region.

==> Tamil Nadu has been experiencing above-normal hot temperature conditions since March. Every month has seen hot and scorching sunshine, with June itself recording several days of 40°C in Chennai.

==> Dry westerlies and the absence of sea breeze are common during the Southwest Monsoon period every year. However, temperatures rarely cross 40°C beyond June.

==> This year, the state is witnessing rare and intense hot conditions, with frequent 40°C+ temperatures likely to continue. The primary reasons are the emerging effects of a strong El Niño and suppression over the Indian Ocean.

==> For instance, Thondi in Ramanathapuram district recorded already sets a new all-time July record of 40.7°C. Which is 6.5°C above normal and surpasses the previous highest of 40.4°C recorded on 13 March 2018.

==> The next one week is expected to remain hot and dry with continued scorching sunshine and frequent record breaking temperatures across Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorm activity is likely to remain below normal.

==> Especially between 12 PM and 4 PM, conditions are expected to remain hot and sizzling.

*People are advised to stay hydrated, consume plenty of healthy fluids, carry an umbrella, and avoid unnecessary travel during midday.
