@ncpike21 Something that loses me, too. It seems private healthcare is generally villainized in Canada by the public and our government, perhaps because we wish to separate ourselves from the US and their healthcare system. Yet we're paying out-of-pocket already for many services.
As my classmates have said, allocating more money into preventative and proactive health services has the potential to be part of the solution to turning our healthcare system around. Providing more coverage for key meds (e.g., insulin, blood pressure meds) is a start. #PHARM4420
Canadians do not have the "free healthcare" that our government claims to provide for us. We pay out-of-pocket for many everyday services: drugs, dental, physio, mental health therapy. Healthcare that is needed to prevent conditions that are serious and expensive #PHARM4420
Other medically unnecessary services are less obvious. But a line must be drawn somewhere. We must re-evaluate where this line is and move money around a bit before we throw more into the pot. Healthcare reform will not be accomplished without this process. #PHARM4420
@aseetypharmacy As you said before, Canada is already a big spender on healthcare services without the results to show for it. Throwing more money at our healthcare system surely won't solve things alone as we must re-evaluate where we're spending and re-allocate as necessary. #PHARM4420
@Brooke16831 Totally agree - I'm sure there are many patients who don't know about pharmacy services such as prescription extensions and minor ailments prescribing (I didn't before I started pharmacy school!). I hope pharmacist-led clinics will help promote our scope and utility. #pharm4420
@KaylaWatton So glad to see the promotion of minor ailments! Super important that pharmacists are able to prescribe for them and offer other pharmacy services like prescription extensions and so on in NL, where we have such a healthcare gap! #pharm4420
It's worth noting that pharmacist-led clinics can be found in large chains as well as in smaller, independent pharmacies. Lifecare Rx is a stand-alone pharmacy in Oakville, ON, that just opened up their clinic in January of 2023 - check it out! #pharm4420 https://t.co/g5Dw3l0aFB
@JinhyeongKim11 Pharmacist-led clinics are an exciting avenue for NL! It would be great to get some up and running - pharmacists really have proven their utility as accessible healthcare professionals over the pandemic.
Pharmacist-led clinics have been popping up around Canada this past year, including in NS. These clinics allow pharmacists to practice to their full scope and provide a means to bridge the healthcare gap among patients who don't have a family physician! #pharm4420
