Coach Johnny Jones was a friend of mine from Lansing whose impact and legacy will resonate throughout the region for many years to come. He led Everett, my former high school, to back-to-back women’s basketball championships in 2000 and 2001 and later led the men’s basketball team to a championship in 2004. This was no small feat - not many people can say they’ve coached two programs at the same time let alone win championships with them! He was not only a great coach, Coach Jones was great at turning girls into young women and boys into young men, serving as a father figure to many of his former players. We shared so many memories playing softball for the Magic Allstars where we won the city championship. He was the pitcher and I played third base. We would play bidwiz and spades and I thoroughly enjoyed the competitive nature we shared. He was a quiet man but very funny amongst his friends and would do anything for you including giving you the shirt off his back. The Battle Creek and Lansing Community will miss this leader of young people and we will be praying for his wife, family members, friends, former players and the entire Lansing community.
