I called the @MumbaiPolice 100 number for the first time in my life today. I was utterly disappointed.

A crazy man in Powai, who calls him self a dog trainer (Ashutosh Kadam - [phone]) assaulted my friend. This person goes around doing private training sessions for dogs in the Hiranandani public park. During this training session he hits and pokes dogs in the public dog park. He also creepily takes videos of dogs without the owners permission. Today on being politely requested to not take videos of other dogs he physically assaulted my friend at the park. I called the police right away but had a terrible, almost scary experience. I shudder thinking what if this situation had escalated further.

But you might be wondering why I was disappointed in the @MumbaiPolice?
(Whom I respected tremendously before today)

Well here’s why:
- First, the lady on the other end of the 100 emergency number not only hung up on me but wasted time passing the information. She was not calm or composed. Rather angry. Shouting in the middle of me trying to defend my friend and stop the man from hurting him further. She wanted the street name and other details that wouldn’t really further help the police reach me. She was given at this point the garden name, the name of the building right opposite to the garden (Verona). This was a physical assault situation. What would have happened if this was a more escalated issue. I can’t even imagine the apathy you must have working at the emergency number and responding with such harshness.
- Second, the tardiness to response given the situation. The @MumbaiPolice took their own sweet time to arrive. And these policemen were literally in the opposite building I mentioned on the call (Verona). Between the first call and them arriving from the building across the road it took them around 30 minutes. I did get a call back from one officer within 10 minutes. I was asked to describe the guy and was asked for his location. On being informed that he was walking away after assaulting my friend I was asked which direction he was headed. Anyway, by the time they arrived this man had not only verbally abused and physically assaulted us but had casually walked away hurling expletives and stating how he owned the park and he’ll do whatever he likes.
- Third, the response of the two policemen that arrived on listening to the situation was.. “Why didn’t you hit the man back? There were 3 of y’all. And one of him. If this was a girl he hit you would have shown heroism.” (Translated from Marathi). How absolutely ridiculous. Respond to violence with even more violence. How do we expect these individuals to keep peace and order when their response is chaos. Hit the man that’s hitting us, how original. And then the line about the girl. On completing their unnecessary moral policing these two officers took my full name. Did absolutely nothing. Walked away.

I’ve always defended India amongst friends and family, stating that the country is getting better and that we have such a hopeful road ahead.

But when crazy people like this individual walk around getting violent and the response of our law enforcement officers is such absurdity, I worry and I agree that our country is in a mess. @MumbaiPolice you’ve lost my trust.
