“If I died knowing that I did what was right or did my best to do what was right and even If in the history books they said I did wrong, I would still feel okay about that, I care about the reality of goodness and not the perception of it”
-Elon Musk
To clear California High-Speed Rail for use on EXISTING train tracks between San Jose and San Francisco alone, the environmental review process produced a final report of 8,204 pages (456 hours of reading) and took almost 14 years to complete. We need reform.
Conversely and equally, the anti-policing and rapid decriminalization movement of the previous admin drove this response. Humans always over-correct when something goes wrong. X didn't work, so let's do the exact opposite. The appropriate response is usually somewhere in between but that's not how are political system works these days (sigh). The truth is, neither side should be pointing fingers right now. You're both at fault.
MFFL! Serious question, I can't tell if you're upset by the semantics of his statement (tax countries) or the execution (price gets passed along to consumers). Trump is very clearly referring to China and by extension, BYD (which is heavily subsidized by the Chinese govt). BYD does not currently sell passenger cars in the US. Automakers (globally) are terrified BYD will enter their markets and massively undercut all existing automakers, putting them out of business and thus jeopardizing production-based jobs. Canada literally just imposed a 100% tariff on all Chinese EVs coming into the country 3 days ago.
This is the scariest chart I’ve ever made. This is what it looks like when a country is heading toward a financial precipice.
Each color shows $1T getting added to the national debt.
Not that long ago, it took six years to add a bar.
We’re now adding one every 90-120 days.
The explosion of debt has been the only bipartisan phenomenon of my lifetime. For us conservatives, we can’t blame it on just Biden and Obama. For you Democrats, you can’t put this on just Trump. It’s both parties, all presidents, and every Congress.
The acceleration started under George W. Bush. Bush went into 2002 with less than $6T of debt. Thanks to GWOT military spending and tax cuts we probably couldn’t afford, $6T grew to $7T in 23 months, $8T in another 21 months, and $9T in 23 months.
Then the Great Recession hit. We added the next trillion in 13 months, crossing $10T for the first time in American history. And we haven’t looked back since.
During the second Obama term, with spending reined in by the Tea Party movement, annual deficits reduced to less than $1T, and growth in the debt slowed down. At the end of Obama’s tenure, it took nearly 20 months to go from $19T to $20T.
That would be the last time it took a full year to add a trillion dollars to the debt.
In 2017, a real-estate developer got inaugurated as president. And, if there’s one thing we all know—and love!—about real-estate investors, it’s that they understand the value of leverage.
Under Trump, even as the economy surged, deficits grew, and national debt once again spiraled. We ended 2019 with a little over $24T in debt.
Then Covid hit, along with consumer stimulus, PPP loans, massive government spending, and reduced tax receipts. Over just two months in 2020—April and May—we added $2T to the national debt. Ever since, we’ve been adding $1T every 160 or so days.
With Biden in the White House and a narrowly divided Congress, we’re now adding $1T to the debt every three to four months. It took just 91 days to go from $32T to $33T. 104 days to get to $34T.
And it’s not slowing down. Biden has another 300+ days in office this term. When he or Trump enters their second respective term in office in 2025, the debt will likely be above $37T.
Where does it end? As deficits continue to pile up and borrowing costs remain relatively high compared to where they were over the previous 20 years, how is any of this sustainable?
We have a $30 TRILLION deficit.
This plan will only cover 1.7% of the total deficit OVER 10 YEARS. We pay TWICE that amount in 1 year of interest ALONE on our debt.
WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM - NOT A TAX PROBLEM.
@GuyDealership@JoshuaOgundu Reality: The existing dealership model will not work for EVs. They make too much money servicing vehicles. EVs don't require the same amount of service. Dealerships are not going to sacrifice that revenue. However, they will happily push consumers towards more complex hybrids.
Just a little animation showing the ridiculous acceleration of Falcon launches over the last few years. #SpaceX are freaking incredible. 😍

@mattyglesias@elonmusk Serious question (that you also won't answer)... As a self-proclaimed free speech absolutist, shouldn't you be shining a light on the ultimate censor and not throwing shade at the guy building the only platform you can openly share your opinions (including your current employer)?
@chrislhayes Kinda ironic since you're:
A> making sensationalized statement (just like Tucker) to provoke your audience;
B> doing it on the same platform you're criticizing.
Isn't it actually a good thing that Twitter exists and you both have a platform to openly share your opinion?
People of the future will go to the app store and search "drugs" and a bunch of drug experience apps will show up. They'll tap one for a 30-second sample and the brain-machine interface in their head will give them that experience. If they like it, they can pay for a full hour or pay for a monthly subscription to have unlimited use. Someone who likes, say, psychedelics, will download an app that includes 40 varieties of psychedelic experience to try.
When they're high, they'll be able to crank the intensity up and down with a slide of their finger or shut off the high with a tap. All drugs will be totally safe with no hangover or comedown.
Musicians will create drug playlists to go along with new albums that time the different highs to different parts of the album. Movie producers will hire drug artists to "score" the movie with physical states the same way composers score movies with music.
There will be an "Oldies" app that lets people try a collection of retro drugs that their parents used to use back in the 2020s when drugs were still physical substances. It'll sound so old-school to them that people used to swallow or snort a drug with no guarantee of safety and no way to turn the experience off without waiting it out for hours.
Great @McKinsey report on the $Tn space economy!
Love the chart: satellite costs ⬇~100-1,000x — akin to the mainframe-to-desktop computer transition at 793x.
Meanwhile, rocket costs ⬇ 5x (correction: not 20x /95%) — akin to Model-T transition at 6x
