A classic story in how the manufacturing sector flourished in Bihar's West Champaran district with intervention from the district authorities. Reverse migration turned out to be positive, generating revenues and employment by mapping skills.
Just recently interviewed a teacher who resigned last week.
Why did you resign?
“I have a Master’s degree.
I work really hard.
I love teaching kids and am great at my job.
I do it all for a disgracefully low salary.
All of that and I’ve never felt so disrespected by so many.”
Lucky are the leaders of populous nations where people believe the right way to measure the success of distribution of some essential good is in terms of the absolute number of people receiving it, instead of the percentage.
Schools are unnecessary brokers between learners & educators. They make for an inefficient system. Schools should be free, competitive marketplace where students choose what they wish to learn , when and from whom. Teachers too will earn better.
@soumyajitecon@econotw@LinkedIn In my opinion, it’s like how people usually post about their marquee institution, soft signalling. This may work for the ones not from marquee institutions. Trying to tell, rather than show, their agency over learning, command over skills.
Unsure about its efficacy.
The Feynman-technique of learning:
> Pick a topic you wanna understand and start studying it
> Pretend to teach the topic to a classroom
> Go back to the books when you get stuck
> Simplify and use analogies!
• If you wanna master something, teach it. 🧠
mentoring call today:
someone thinking about applying to a PhD in economics. wanted to know if at 30 he was too old. (absolutely not!). why it take awhile to decide he wanted to? he had a horrible experience in his undergrad at a top university ...
@CSF_India published a balance sheet of average Indian affordable private school. Despite 60% of monthly expenditure on teacher salaries, teachers make ~ $100 a month. The existing model cannot deliver quality. We need a new model for schools. #EconTwitter#education#edchat
Great news! Pedagogy, assessments & tech maybe important to improve school education. That said, we must remodel the core business itself.
Redraft teacher contracts,
Rethink finances
Deregulate market & enable choice.
We must trust the market. #EconTwitter#edchat#education
Do schools curb a teacher’s autonomy and disincentivize performance? Will teachers operate better given complete autonomy and better pay?
Are schools being unneeded agents amidst students and their teachers? #EconTwitter#educhat#schools#education#edtech
