@EricTopol Hard to believe that FDA and other were against the booster and now all in favor. The data they are looking did not just come out of this week. Clearly they played a political game.
What will happen in a few months when most people would have already been vaccinated for several months and vaccine efficacy drops even more? We need to know more about the FDA plan to release boosters.
New and important data on Delta breakthrough infections, large Qatar experience and follow-up of > 1.2 million vaccinees https://t.co/2ye1Kz9OPV
2-doses vaccine effectiveness vs infections
Pfizer 53.5%
Moderna 84.8%
Either 57.2%
(replicates gap of recent Mayo Clinic study)
If moderna started later than the effect could be simply related to the timing from vaccination. Which is scary as will indicate that soon in the US infections could go even higher
@EricTopol@sailorrooscout thoughts? Kinda nice that they have the symptomatic / asymptomatic split. In studies like this how do they deal with lack of test seeking of asymptomatics? Eg since Moderna started months later in Qatar, might that pop have had less opportunities to get tested?
Eventually there will be a level that is to low and infection could be serious. How can we assume that that time is the same for everyone. Monitoring Ab level seems the logical things to do. The more data the better despite some MDs and FDA advocating for less Ab testing.
@EricTopol (3/3) ...in the vast majority of cases be mild. So why the freaking out? Don't we kinda know by now this is how the immune system works? Where along the line did we get this idealistic notion that Covid was gonna be undetectable on PCR tests perpetually after vaccination?
@EricTopol Incredible for me as non scientific expert: not to take the possibility of waning immunity into account. I checked ab levels of my family and 6m after 2nd shot ab are gone. So bcells OF COURSE to wrap up production if contact w virus again

Home testing would be great. But you can’t have data and home testing at the same time. Labs report data daily to government agencies. Do you expect individual to do the same? Do you expect people self testing positive to honestly report their results. Hard to believe!
There are 2 levels to flying blind in the Delta wave.
One is the CDC's void of data 👇
The other is our testing, << 1/2 of 3rd wave, w/
very poor availability
A no show: home rapid antigen tests, which should be freely provided to every household to help safely open schools
Using the same logic why don’t american MDs go work abroad where doctors are few? Maybe they make more money here? Of course that is not the reason. The problem of many countries not having a vaccine is not to be solved my companies.
@DrTomFrieden Even worse, pharmaceutical companies are already trying to convince people they need one, when for the overwhelmingly majority of people there’s no evidence you do.
Doesn’t help that the White House called boosters here vs doing more abroad a ‘false choice’. Supplies ARE finite!
@DrTomFrieden No it's not. You don't understand how the system works. It's their responsibility to maximize profits. They're not a charity. It's the GOVERNMENTS' responsibility to regulate them, especially during national/global emergencies. Shame on the Administration. Shame on Congress.

If we use this view point why give two doses when even one produces quite a good level of protection? Going beyond, why not give a reduced dose? The reason many countries have little or no vaccine is not because @Pfizer thinks we need a booster.
It is frankly an outrage that the companies making mRNA vaccines are vastly more interested in selling booster doses, the need for which has not yet been proven, to rich countries than ramping up production for the rest of the world.

On natural immunity from Covid
"Antibody levels and neutralizing capacity are generally maintained up to 7.7 months, and in a substantial number of individuals antibody levels increase after some months after symptom onset"

Many doctors and the FDA keep saying that measuring antibody level is not necessary but most published papers shows antibody trend and use it to compare vaccine efficacy and immunity. What is it? Do they matter or not ...
