The real cost of India's data boom isn't wasted time.

It's the quiet erosion of our ability to wait.

Cheap mobile data has given millions of young Indians unlimited entertainment in their pockets. Every notification, every reel and every swipe offers an instant reward. The brain adapts. Over time, it begins to expect that every worthwhile experience should arrive immediately.

That is where the real damage begins.

Books ask you to stay with one idea for hours. Newspapers ask you to understand context instead of headlines. Learning a skill demands months of practice. Building a business takes years. Investing requires patience. None of these activities deliver dopamine every few seconds.

Scrolling does.

India reached the smartphone age long before it reached widespread prosperity. We imported the world's most addictive digital products while we were still trying to build human capital. The result is a strange mismatch. We have first-world levels of digital stimulation, but we are still a country that desperately needs first-generation learners, skilled workers, entrepreneurs, scientists and readers.

The opportunity cost is enormous.

Every hour spent mindlessly scrolling is an hour not spent building knowledge that compounds for decades.

Reading is different. A book slows the mind down. It strengthens attention, curiosity and independent thinking. Newspapers teach you to connect events instead of reacting to isolated headlines. Productive learning develops skills that increase your earning power for life.

These are all compound investments.

Social media mostly compounds for the platform.

A nation does not become rich because it consumes the world's most data. It becomes rich because its people accumulate knowledge, skills and productive habits.

Perhaps we are measuring the wrong statistic.

Instead of celebrating data consumption per person, we should ask a different question.

How many books does the average young Indian read every year? How much uninterrupted time do they spend learning something difficult?

Those numbers will tell us far more about India's future than gigabytes ever will.

ह्या वर्षी जेवढी जांभळे बाजारात दिसत आहेत तेवढी मी गेल्या तीन दशकात कधी पाहिली नाहीत.

जांभळाचे अक्षरशः सडे पडत आहेत. ज्या झाडांना मागच्या वर्षी तुरळक फळे आली होती, ती झाडे देखील जांभळाचा सडा टाकत आहेत. ज्या झाडांना फळे आली होती तिथे सडा पडायला लागलाय.

हे नक्की काय चाललंय. ?

आमची आजी फक्त हेच म्हणायची की " ज्या उन्हाळ्यात जांभळाचे असे सडे पडतात , त्या वर्षी दुष्काळ असतो"

आजींचे पारंपरिक ज्ञान वनस्पतीशास्रानुसार वैज्ञानिक आकलन अगदी बरोबर आणि अचूक आहे. विज्ञानात या रंजक आणि तितक्याच धक्कादायक प्रक्रियेला "मास्टिंग" (Masting) किंवा "स्ट्रेस फ्रुटिंग" (Stress Fruiting) म्हटले जाते.

झाडांनी स्वतःला संपवून जास्तीत जास्त फळे देण्याच्या या शेवटच्या प्रयत्नाला कधीकधी "सुसाईड फ्रुटिंग" (Suicide Fruiting) किंवा "बंपर क्रॉप" देखील म्हणतात.

हे नक्की काय आहे आणि यामागचे विज्ञान काय सांगते, ते आपण सोप्या भाषेत समजून घेऊया:

१. 'सर्व्हायव्हल इन्स्टिंक्ट' (अस्तित्वाची लढाई)
प्राध्यापक मॅडम म्हणाल्या त्याप्रमाणे, हा निसर्गाचा 'जनुके पुढे चालू ठेवण्याचा' (Survival of the Species) नियम आहे. जेव्हा झाडाला जमिनीखालून पाण्याचे दुर्भिक्ष जाणवू लागते किंवा हवामानात मोठे बदल होणार असे संकेत मिळतात, तेव्हा झाड "बचावात्मक मोड" (Defense Mode) मध्ये जाते.
झाडाला जाणीव होते की कदाचित पुढील काळात आपण जगू शकणार नाही. अशा वेळी स्वतःला वाचवण्याऐवजी, आपली प्रजाती पृथ्वीवर टिकून राहावी म्हणून झाड आपली संपूर्ण ऊर्जा 'बिया' (फळे) तयार करण्यासाठी वापरते.

२. नवीन पाने-फांद्यांवर बंदी
अशा वर्षात झाड नवीन पालवी फुटणे किंवा फांद्या वाढवणे पूर्णपणे थांबवते. कारण नवीन पानांना जगवण्यासाठी जास्त पाणी आणि अन्न लागते. झाड ती ऊर्जा वाचवून फक्त आणि फक्त जांभळाचे उत्पादन वाढवण्यावर केंद्रित करते. यामुळेच मागच्या वर्षी ज्या झाडांना तुरळक फळे होती, ती झाडेही यंदा फळांनी डवरून गेली आहेत.

३. आजींचे भाकीत आणि विज्ञान (दुष्काळाचा संबंध)
आजींचे निरीक्षण अगदी अचूक आहे, कारण वनस्पती हवामानातील बदलांना मानवापेक्षा खूप आधी आणि संवेदनशीलतेने ओळखतात.

जांभळाचे मूळ 'सोटमूळ' (Taproot) असते, जे जमिनीच्या अगदी खोल थरापर्यंत जाते.

जेव्हा भूगर्भातील पाण्याची पातळी कमालीची खालावते, तेव्हाच या मुळांना ताण (Water Stress) जाणवतो.

हा पाण्याचा ताण म्हणजेच येणाऱ्या दुष्काळाचे किंवा कडक उन्हाळ्याचे संकेत असतात.

म्हणूनच, ज्या वर्षी उन्हाळ्यात जांभळाचा असा अभूतपूर्व सडा पडतो, तो निसर्गाचा भविष्यातील कोरड्या कालखंडाचा इशारा असतो.

थोडक्यात सांगायचे तर...
जांभळाचे झाड आत्महत्या करत नाही, तर स्वतःचे बलिदान देऊन आपल्या पुढच्या पिढीला (बियांना) जन्म देण्याचा प्रयत्न करत असते. निसर्गाचे हे चक्र थक्क करणारे आहे. आजींचे पिढ्यानपिढ्यांचे निरीक्षण आणि विज्ञानाची तत्त्वे इथे तंतोतंत जुळून आली आहेत.

यंदा जांभळाचा आस्वाद नक्की घ्या, पण निसर्गाने दिलेल्या या 'दुष्काळाच्या' संकेताकडे गांभीर्याने बघून पाणी आणि संसाधनांचा वापर जपून करण्याची गरज आहे, हेच यातून दिसून येते.! 🙏🏼

Now that the 131st Amendment Bill failed, allocation of Lok Sabha seats will be based on 2026 census data.

As per current estimates, seven States will likely lose 35 seats: AP (-5), Telangana (-3), TN (-10), Karnataka (-2), Kerala (-7), Odisha (-4), and WB (-4).

Four States will likely gain 34 seats: UP (+12), Bihar (+10), MP (+5), and Rajasthan (+7).

BJP is widely believed to be the potential beneficiary of redistribution of seats to States based on 2026 population.

In a stunning act of self-denial, the NDA government came forward to freeze the current share of States based on the 1971 census data. There could be many reasons for BJP committing to such a freeze - putting the nation above the party, paving the way for expanding their footprint in the South, or avoiding a divisive issue when the nation has to focus on growth and prosperity in the face of global challenges. Whatever be the motivation of BJP, the seven States that lost share of population are offered an unexpected gift. You don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

Surprisingly, the parties which have great stakes in the South and East have scored a spectacular self goal. This is a classic case of cutting the nose to spite the face.

In 2001, as the freeze in seats was expiring, I was deeply involved in persuading the then Vajpayee government to continue the freeze in the number of seats allocated to States for another 25 years. An unwieldy coalition and the economic challenge posed by external sanctions after the Pokharan explosion demanded national unity, and the parties responded with the 84th Amendment. Now again a priceless opportunity arose, and the Opposition squandered it without any strategic thinking.

If political animosity makes you oblivious of your own interest, or larger interests of fostering unity and focusing on growth and harmony, it is a sign of dysfunctional politics.

I appeal to all parties to come together and find a harmonious solution to the thorny problem of seats allocation in the face of demographic imbalances. National unity and our quest for opportunity and prosperity for all demand a fair and swift resolution.

In the long run migration will resolve the imbalances. Already millions of migrant workers are building and sustaining the economies of several States in the South, West and North. That is why, despite low fertility rate, Maharashtra's share of the population is increasing.
In the US, dramatic internal migration changed the demography and representation over the years. People move freely to States where there is growth and jobs are created. In a century, Florida increased its representation in the US Congress from 4 to 28, California from 11 to 52, Texas from 18 to 38, and Washington from 5 to 10. Owing to outward migration, New York lost seats, from 43 to 26, Pennsylvania from 36 to 17, Illinois from 27 to 17, Ohio from 22 to 15, and Missouri from 16 to 8.

We should make it easy for people to migrate to other States and recognize and respect their constitutional rights everywhere and make their life easier and safe. That will resolve our demographic challenges. Most states reached low fertility levels, and Bihar, UP, MP, Rajasthan and Jharkhand too are going to reach there in a few years.

We need a reasoned and pragmatic approach to grow together and become strong. Let us persuade parties to shed inflammatory and divisive rhetoric and focus on quality education and skills and opportunities for all.

The tragedy in Chhattisgarh is deeply painful. 20 families have lost everything. Proper compensation, livelihood support for the families, and a thorough investigation are non-negotiable.

But naming Shri @AnilAgarwal_Ved Ji in the FIR before any investigation raises serious concerns. He is a self-made man from a humble and backward community background who built a global enterprise from scratch. He had no role in that plant's operations.

When accidents happen in PSU plants or Railways, do we name the Chairman? We do not. The same standard must apply to the private sector too.

Investigate first. Establish responsibility based on evidence. Then act.

India's #ViksitBharat vision needs people like Shri Anil Agarwal to keep investing and building. That happens only when investors trust the system. 🇮🇳
