@edwinbrady I agree that explicitly noting something at 0 seems very valuable. My question was more: why prefer this as default, instead of defaulting to promotion with the option to fix its use? (The answer may well be: "to make users actually think about the code they're writing!" :D)

@edwinbrady I found it surprising that metavariables (such as the `n` in the first Vec example) are not automatically promoted from 0 when used. Would that sort of analysis/auto-promotion produce other issues?
