Senior Supreme Court advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Menaka Guruswamy delivered a powerful and eye-opening speech highlighting the deep-rooted lack of diversity within the Indian judiciary.

She pointed to the systemic barriers faced by women and members of historically marginalised communities in judicial appointments, stating:

“They will not appoint women to the judiciary. They will not appoint people from lower castes. They will not appoint Scheduled Castes.”

If women, Dalits, Adivasis and other marginalised communities remain severely underrepresented in the institutions that interpret the Constitution and decide people’s rights, then where is equal representation in the justice system ?
