Today, our Embassy proudly participated in the highly successful Passport DC event from 9am to 4pm, welcoming nearly 2,500 visitors to experience the rich #culture and #heritage of #Eritrea. Guests enjoyed authentic Eritrean cuisine, a traditional coffee ceremony, historical exhibitions, music, and received QR code cards to learn more about Eritrea through our website.

The event brought together mostly #Americans, along with many other #international visitors, all eager to discover and learn more about Eritrea. A wonderful day of cultural exchange, friendship, and connection.

We were also honored to welcome Eritrean-American comedian and actress #Tiffany #Haddish along with her crew, Kimberly Bassett Washington DC Secretary, and Jan Du Plain the liaison of the over 190 Embassies, who visited the Embassy today added to the spirit of this special occasion.

This success was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Embassy staff in close coordination with the vibrant #Eritrean #community in the #Washington, DC area. Deflection Is Not Diplomacy: Ethiopia’s Letter Tests the Limits of the UN Charter

Unsubstantiated allegations and implied self-defense claims threaten to normalize Charter erosion in the Horn of Africa

Ethiopia’s recent letter addressed to Eritrea and circulated internationally as a diplomatic communication should be read with care. It is not a peace overture. It is a political instrument, carefully framed to project restraint while advancing allegations that, if left unchallenged, risk distorting the legal architecture of the United Nations Charter itself.

The letter accuses Eritrea of territorial occupation, military aggression, and support for armed groups inside Ethiopia. These are grave claims. Under international law, such allegations demand a high evidentiary threshold. Yet the document offers none. No coordinates, no dates, no operational details, no third-party verification. What it provides instead is insinuation, sufficient to shape narrative, insufficient to meet legal standards.

This matters because the Charter is explicit. Article 2(4) prohibits not only the use of force, but the threat of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. Accusations of aggression, when unsubstantiated, function as narrative force: they create political cover for escalation while avoiding legal accountability.

Ethiopia’s letter follows a familiar pattern. When internal crises intensify armed insurgencies across multiple regions, eroding political consensus, and a widening governance vacuum externalization becomes a governing strategy. Blame is projected outward to delay reckoning inward. Diplomacy becomes a stage for deflection.

Eritrea rejects the allegations categorically. It maintains no forces on Ethiopian territory and provides no support to armed groups operating inside Ethiopia. More importantly, Eritrea has consistently adhered to the principles of sovereign equality and non-interference, enshrined in Article 2(1) and Article 2(7) of the Charter, even during periods of provocation and sustained misrepresentation.

Attempts to reframe Ethiopia’s internal fragmentation as externally induced are not merely misleading; they invert responsibility. What Ethiopia characterizes as “aggression” is, in reality, a narrative device designed to obscure the proliferation of domestic armed actors, the militarization of politics, and the cumulative consequences of decisions taken in Addis Ababa.

Equally concerning is the letter’s implicit legal signaling. By invoking security threats without evidence, it gestures toward Article 51, the Charter’s self-defense provision. Yet Article 51 is unambiguous: the inherent right of self-defense arises only if an armed attack occurs. No such attack has taken place. No Eritrean action meets that threshold. To suggest otherwise is to erode one of the Charter’s most carefully circumscribed provisions.

Normalizing implied self-defense claims in the absence of an armed attack is not a technical matter. It weakens collective security by lowering the bar for unilateral action. The Security Council has seen this pattern before, and its consequences are rarely contained.

The letter further muddies the legal waters by referencing maritime access and the Port of Assab. This inclusion is not incidental. It attempts to conflate unsubstantiated security claims with questions of sovereign infrastructure. Under international law, access to another state’s ports is not an entitlement. Assab is sovereign Eritrean territory, and any cooperation regarding its use can arise only through voluntary agreement, not diplomatic pressure, and certainly not threat-based linkage.

Dialogue, as required under Article 33 of the Charter, must be grounded in good faith. It cannot begin with accusations presented as facts, nor with preconditions rooted in narratives that collapse under scrutiny. Negotiation between sovereign states presumes equality, not presumed guilt.

Potemkin Party (PP) trolls feign annoyance, get into hysterical commotion, and disparage Eritrea's routine diplomatic activities and/or Presidential visits to some country. And they have the audacity to portray Eritrea as a "lackey and doing the bidding of" some foreign country; these days, the tantrum is on "Eritrea-Egypt" ties!

Need to remind them to swallow these dosage of reality in historical terms. Indeed:
* It is the Ethiopian regime which solicited the diplomatic and political clout of the US to suppress Eritrea's right of decolonization in the 1940s. The overwhelming historical evidence on these machinations have since long been available in the public domain.
*Ethiopian regimes relied on US and Israeli military and technical support in the first decades; and on USSR (and Allies) massive military support in the later decades in their attempts to defeat Eritrea's thirty year war of national liberation. This is yesterday's history fresh in the minds of the contemporary generation (including Gen Z) and that cannot be whimsically erased or wished away.
*Even these days, the Potemkin Party relies heavily on massive international development assistance; opaque ties of dependence on some countries; and IMF bailouts as it pursues belligerent, reckless and unlawful policies against its neighbour under the agenda of "sovereign access to the sea".

Eritrea's policy choices of self-respect and political independence are otherwise well known to merit elaboration.

Potemkin Party (PP) senior officials seem to have contracted a severe case of historical amnesia.

In a bizarre and rather amusing announcement to the "House of Representatives" this week, the PP's leader stated that "he had scoured every archive in Addis Abeba - the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet minutes, and parliamentary records - yet found no official record or institutional decision how Ethiopia lost access to the Red Sea".

Hopefully, this debilitating disease is at its incipient or early phase.

* Indeed, only seven years ago, on 9 July 2018 and accompanied by senior officials of his regime including the then Foreign Minister and now Secretary General of IGAD, he had signed in Asmara the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The kernel and cardinal content of this Agreement revolved on the "implementation of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) decision", which affirmed Eritrea's internationally recognized boundary for more than a century in accordance with the Treaties of 1900, 1902 and 1908.

* In another moment of truth in those times, Ethiopia's Army Chief of Staff confessed that "he and his colleagues were embarrassed in May 1998 when the incumbent government publicly accused Eritrea of aggression while it was the Ethiopian army which actually unleashed the war in the first place ". Today, he seems to be infected by this collective amnesia as he tries to justify his incessant saber-rattling and agenda of war on spurious pretexts in contravention of international law and Eritrea's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

*Similarly, another PP General, Bacha Debele, confessed, three years ago, about the disastrous defeat that the Ethiopian army contingent had suffered - in his graphic words "ተጨፈጨፍን/we were completely annihilated " - on the Bure Front when it attempted to occupy Assab in June 2000. Apparently infected by the same historical amnesia, this retired General has joined the chorus to clamour for another cycle of irredentist war of aggression against Eritrea in order to occupy Assab.

The incipient, even if already severe, disease of collective amnesia that has gripped the tight circle of senior Potemkin Party officials will need proper therapy: History 101. Link below is the Introductory Chapter I.

The whole syllabus will of course consist of: the denial of Eritrea's right to decolonization in the 1940s; annexation and the armed struggle; all the way back to medieval and ancient history with objective archeological findings and interpretations.

CALL AN AGGRESSOR BY ITS NAME

The #AU, the #UN, and all responsible member states bear not only a moral duty but also a binding legal obligation to reject and condemn #Ethiopia’s “#Prosperity” Party #expansionist rhetoric and its dangerous implications. Their publicly declared maritime ambitions, orchestrated media campaign and planned intentions to invade sovereign Eritrean territories can not be considered a mere political discourse; it is a direct assault, not only against a sovereign country, but also on the international legal order, the Charter of the United Nations, and the foundational principles of the African Union that uphold the recognition of colonial borders and respect the #sovereignty of member states.

Failure to act or even silence in the face of such open threats amount to complicity. It will embolden those who entertain daydreams and believe borders can be redrawn by force. It will also further destabilize a region already burdened by instability. The international community must therefore speak with one clear voice; call an #aggressor by its name. #Aggression, in any form or guise, should neither be tolerated nor have a place in the 21st century. Peace and stability among nations depend on principled, decisive, and collective rejection of unlawful expansionist territorial ambitions.

It has been crystal clear that Eritrea’s #independence, its sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable; they were earned through immense sacrifice, united popular support and safeguarded by unshakable national unity and resolve of its people. Any attempt to undermine these principles would be a grave miscalculation. #Eritrea possesses both the legitimate right and capability to defend its #sovereignty; firmly, lawfully, and decisively.

The manufactured outrage by the Prosperity Party (PP) over President Isaias's remarks on 'Oromumma' has been thoroughly exposed by the respected #Oromo/#Ethiopian scholar, Professor Ezekiel Gebissa.

Professor Gebissa makes it unequivocally clear: President Isaias said nothing new—his statements are consistent with what he has expressed for the past seven years. More importantly, he emphasizes that PP's 'Oromumma' ideology does not truly represent the Oromo people. On the contrary, it is harming the Oromo communities, isolating them and fueling animosity from other groups, particularly the Amhara and Tigrayans.

He also exposes PP’s escalating warmongering rhetoric and its dangerous push to ignite a new conflict with #Eritrea.
