No one has explained this better than @BenSasse at the Kavanaugh hearing.
If you've not heard it, please set aside 15 minutes to listen. It's well worth it.

Essay 40
REALIGNMENT WITH A SIDE OF HONESTY
I've been a conservative oriented person for all of my political life, but 4 years ago I watched as government squashed everything I care about in the country. They destroyed trust, used the state to smash small business and line the pockets of their crony friends and donors, and insisted upon forcing people into an experimental medicine that has wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands of people. Yet if I do an honest assessment of the last 30 years of my political engagement, the truth is that I have been just as culpable of bolstering the growth and capabilities of government towards the decimation of the individual.
I see the American politic realigning and I have hope that it will become something better than it has been. I do think it takes giving up on old names and labels and looking to people who have the principles to stay dedicated to telling the truth and living as honestly as they can - especially those in power and in powerful institutions like media and service.
People everywhere are giving up longstanding gravitational pulls to party and politics because I think they want something more for America. This is a plea to my fellow conservatives - it's time to be honest and listen for the voices that are dedicated to the ideals of liberty and the elevation of the individual over the state.
