Haley Stevens is relying on nearly $50 MILLION in outside spending to get her through the Democratic primary in Michigan.
These groups will be happy to abandon her in the general in favor of corporate crony Mike Rogers.
Regarding this story from TIME about Parscale running an Israeli influence op targeting MAGA, I wanted to share some short notes from my trip to Israel last October.
The shift on the political right dominated my discussions with officials and others. They are acutely aware of these shifts. But the biggest takeaway was clear--they did not plan for this.
Whereas they believed they could manage the post-10/7 shift on the left, the emergence of a similar shift on the right has them panicking. Although they continue to reflexively frame it as antisemitism, they know that something more fundamental has changed.
For Israel's aggressive and expansionist agenda, this shift is existential. The Israelis recognize that they cannot maintain their pace and scale of military operations without the guarantee of American help. The American subsidy insulates them from the political, economic, and military costs of their policies. With US support declining and generational change on the horizon, their urgency to harness American power will grow.
In response, the Israelis have adopted a two-pronged approach.
First, they are trying to contain this shift for as long as possible. They are openly engaged in an aggressive public opinion campaign within the United States, particularly online--Netanyahu publicly described social media as one of the most important “weapons” in this effort. This report from TIME is further evidence that they are desperately trying to reach audiences on the right. Coupled with this are the extensive efforts by the lobby to prevent critical voices from attaining or retaining political office.
Second, they are seeking to further institutionalize enduring American support through measures such as Section 219 (House) and Section 1217 (Senate) in the NDAA. These measures are intended to insulate American support from shifting public opinion by cementing it in law. Their objective is to codify these measures while they still have the political capital in Washington to ensure congressional approval--even though doing so runs counter to US interests. We should expect to see more efforts like this.
In sum, the Israelis are moving aggressively to get ahead of emerging political trends. This spans the political spectrum in Israel--it is not unique to Netanyahu and friends. They recognize where the relationship is heading and are acting now to shape its future on their own terms.
