Nothing quite focuses the design mind on buildability than actually building things yourself. Installing PIR in a handcut roof diligently is the devils work.
After more than 800 years the final days of SMITHFIELD MARKET are upon us and ORLANDO GILI has made this magnificent series of portraits of the last generation of butchers to work there.

The progress China has made in renewable energy just THIS YEAR makes the entire rest of the world look like it's standing still.
I wrote in December that to call China the "world leader in renewable energy" was a colossal understatement.
That’s even more true today.
Thread 🧵
@MarkSiddallRIBA@lowcarbonbox@EnergySvgTrust@labcuk@AECBnet That would make sense but the LABC ones especially cater for current construction techniques and u-values. It will all sort itself out. I’m just a little bitter as I have projects completing on site that now need their EPC’s and they’ve withdrawn the psi calc I used during design
Can anyone throw some light on why all the thermal bridging details seem to have evaporated online unless they're provided by a manufacturer? @EnergySvgTrust Enhanced Construction Details - gone, @labcuk details - 'not usable for AD L 2021', I believe @AECBnet used to have some?
Has the standard for calculating psi values changed? Surely there isn't an army of designers paying for the same standard details to be calculated up and down the country? I'm hopeful for https://t.co/2QXq81YENs launching next week. Maybe I'm just bad at googling these things....
@matthewhalmshaw@labcuk I think it can be one of two things:
1. The website was a little bit of a mess and people are getting confused as a result. Now they’ve put a pause on things until it’s sorted.
2. The standard for calculating psi has changed since these were prepped around 8-10 years ago.
Anyone aware of why @labcuk are saying their Construction Details are not suitable for determining psi values under AD L 2021? https://t.co/xV0UoWiKOM
Leaves us reliant on specific suppliers or custom psi calcs as I presume any reasoning also applies to Constructive Details etc
Death has become so normalised now, that it’s not even newsworthy anymore.
No one talks about it.
But over 1,000 more people are quietly dying each week than we would expect.
Amen to this. Absolutely crucial to design in as many passive means as possible to control solar gain. It takes a bit of education with clients but it’s crucial now.
Architects! Britain is a hot country now. There's people in the Highlands complaining about overheating and it's only going to get worse. So we need to stop all the unshaded glazing because it's making everyone too hot.
THREAD 🧵on current minor obsession: the history of housing on this one square in Somers Town, between King's Cross and Euston. This is what it looks like today. Oakshott Court, built 1974-76 by Camden Council. Very nice!
Annual hot weather reminder that if you’ve got sash windows and open them equally at top and bottom you can enjoy some Victorian “air conditioning” that ventilates and removes heat https://t.co/xTRQP922RK
Really pleased to share the news that our proposed agricultural barn conversion in Wicken has been granted planning permission. The barn had existing permission for a Part Q conversion. We added the first floor and got permission to rebuild.
