Half-baked thought: A common failure mode in intellectual inquiry is inventing new systems of technical concepts that function merely to re-describe things we already know. Although they don't contribute to explanation or understanding, many people become convinced that mastering and applying the system of concepts constitutes intellectual progress.

In a moment of serendipity, I was just beginning to implement 8-directional tile based movement with a controller stick and saw this on the same day. Pretty clever and more efficient than all that trigonometry you might use otherwise.
