We encounter many worried PhDs and Postdocs during the #Covid19 crisis and prepared a #petition to raise awareness for our issues and ultimately achieve extensions of PhD and Postdoc contracts in the Netherlands! Sign here⬇️and #SpreadTheWord🗣️#everysignaturehelps#phdlife
It is end of April and you may need some vitamins. You can start by reading the collaborative hattrick by @aksnorw and @thomasperli, starting with Vitamin requirements and biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae https://t.co/3KXVwAgBdK
After a week of isolation, I had my first round of meetings. Started via WhatsApp call with @Jack_Pronk_, no video so I wore my best pj's. Then a virtual coffee session with >18 IMB'ers organised by @aksnorw using Skype. Then virtual drinks using zoom with @martateperek and crew
The open-access pre-print version of our last review article on the @Yeast_Journal is out! If you are interested in knowing a little history behind the chemical defined media for yeast and the B vitamins biosynthetic pathways, just check it out!

Always wondered why a mixture of so many vitamins is added to yeast medium? We reviewed vitamin synthesis and its genetics in a broad range of yeasts. Have a look! Thanks to @rortiz_ESR @thomasperli @Jack_Pronk_ @jgdaran1@pacmen_itn and @Yeast_Journal https://t.co/KDNy8Xh7QF
Vasil D’Ambrosio (@Vasil_dmb) from @DTUBiosustain is updating the #PYFF7 audience on his work on how to change ligand specificity of his transcription factor-based biosensor for vanillin🎚🧬 #H2020#MSCA
How to generate non-GMO interspecies yeast hybrids using fluorescent dyes and FACS, or as @Theycallmecharr likes to call it: Tinder for yeast.
Check out our new paper in Frontiers in Microbiology!

We used the newly-developped Alpaca method to investigate the origin of S. pastorianus genomes across large reference data sets. By using kmer sets, Alpaca detects non-linear evolution without the compuational expense of network analysis!
Nanopore sequencing and comparative genomics of S. pastorianus: the first chromosome-level genome assembly, untangeling of sequence and structural heterozygosity, and proof of a single ancestral hybridization event. @an_salazan@jgdaran1@ThomasAbeel @Jack_Pronk_ @nanopore
The power of evolution at its best: we witnessed the emergence of a completely new gene function by neofunctionalization in real time! The resulting Saccharomyces eubayanus mutant now makes better beer due to its ability to use maltotriose 😁

Getting work done while visiting the IMB group👍🏼 This newly constructed yeast strain is a collaboration between ESR 12 & 13 and will be used for high-throughput screening of the yeast knock-out library. Let's see if we can find some mutants with improved growth! #MSCAction#H2020
Our work on evolution of hybrids under beer brewing conditions is out!
New insights into the origins and domestication of the brewing yeast Sacharomyces pastorianus. Cherry on top: interspecific hybrids are probably suitable for industrial application!
