@myemma @SamTheMostBest @__paleologo My trick is that I bring the book with me to lunch, and I read a few pages every day. So it took me over a year to get through it. I got into the mindset of making it a really long term investment. It's a good approach imo because you don't feel the need to rush through it.
@SenseiRye@__paleologo My phrasing was bad. I meant that I find reading helpful to get a lay of the land and some high level familiarity with a topic (or even just awareness that something exists). And agree that doing the problems are the only way to gain deep understanding.
@kylascan Great article. Reshoring may sadly be necessary due to the elimination of the peace dividend stemming from the US turning its back on historical allies. Instead we must now pay a national security premium to ensure we can produce what we need to hedge geopolitical instability.
@KrisAbdelmessih@__paleologo Just went through this (also reading @__paleologo ‘s book based on your recommendation @KrisAbdelmessih). The advice is excellent for thinking about applied research in general. The linked Beauzamy talk is great. “The paths of glory lead but to the grave.”
Just spent a number of hours debugging some recursive code when it finally dawned on me that 10^9 is not 10**9 in python. The relief is unquantifiable.
@jackmoses0 @SahilBloom What time do you go to bed @SahilBloom ? I was on the 5am wake up train for a while, but I struggled to go to bed early enough which made my average sleep time closer to 6 hours vs my preferred 7+. Lack of sleep is long term associated with cognitive decline…..
@quant_arb@boonscap Check out @rlmcelreath excellent course on GitHub. Focused on scientific applications but great for understanding the fundamentals.
