Wallahi, I worked with some British journalists about 3 months ago. We went to Kaduna State to interview victims of banditry and kidnapping, visiting Kafanchan and other parts of Southern Kaduna.

Among the victims were Fulani families whose cows were stolen, and children who were killed simply because they refused to follow the bandits.

I met a Fulani woman in Dan Honu 2, Kaduna, who had given birth after witnessing her husband being killed by bandits.

And guess what? If we hadn’t gone there, many of these people’s stories would never have been heard.

FULANI ARE ALSO VICTIMS OF BANDITRY IN NIGERIA.

It is heartbreaking that an entire ethnic group is labelled “bandits” because of the actions of criminals among them. Their suffering deserves to be heard too.

Today, our proposed amicus curiae filing was formally received by the Clerk of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in Greenspan v. Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys et al. We ask the Court for permission to present an additional perspective on Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s (@officialABAT) asserted privacy interests and the Nigerian Presidency’s extraordinary decision to issue an official Statehouse Statement publicly discussing the very FBI and DEA records President #Tinubu is asking a U.S. federal court to protect.

Our position is simple: you cannot have it both ways. You cannot invoke privacy before a United States federal court while using the power of the Nigerian Presidency to publicly characterize those same investigative records and tell the world what they supposedly contain. We are asking the Court to consider the Presidency’s own public actions when weighing President #Tinubu’s asserted privacy interests against the public’s legitimate interest in understanding what the @FBI, @DEAHQ, and @TheJusticeDept did in connection with these drug-trafficking investigative records.

We fully expect President Bola #Tinubu and the other parties to challenge this filing for one reason or another. That is entirely expected. Our primary objective is to ensure that the Court is made aware of the Nigerian Presidency’s public statement and our argument that it potentially weakens President Tinubu’s asserted claim of privacy. If the Court permits our amicus brief to be formally docketed and considered, we will welcome that decision. Regardless of the outcome of our motion, we have placed this significant development before the Court so that it can be considered, if the Court deems appropriate, when ruling on the issues before it.

I understand your concern, @Oluwabunmi63697. The sight of children begging on our streets should trouble every Nigerian.

I established the American University of Nigeria as a practical investment in education and the development of the North. If profit had been my primary motivation, I could easily have located the university in Abuja or Lagos, where the commercial advantages would have been greater. I chose Yola because I wanted to invest in my people, create opportunities, and bring world-class education closer to a region that had long needed greater access and development.

And as I have publicly stated before, this university is not my personal property or that of my family. I have already signed a deed of gift transferring it to the community. AUN belongs to the community it was established to serve.

Beyond its classrooms, AUN created the Feed and Read programme, providing vulnerable Almajiri children with daily meals while teaching them literacy and numeracy. Through its Technology-Enhanced Learning for All initiative, AUN also helped more than 20,000 internally displaced children learn to read through educational radio programmes.

Following the Chibok tragedy in 2014, seven years after I left office, AUN awarded scholarships to young women who had escaped Boko Haram, giving them an opportunity to rebuild their lives through education.

My conviction remains simple: every child belongs in a classroom, not on the street with a begging bowl. Whether in government or outside it, I have always sought to turn that conviction into practical action. -AA

Update: In the @FBI filing before the court, the FBI asked the court not to allow the disclosure of highly sensitive “wiretap” recordings responsive to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT). You read that correctly: the FBI admits that the Tinubu-responsive records contain wiretap material. Immediately afterward, the #FBI states that these wiretap-responsive records were compiled in furtherance of its investigation of multiple individuals for heroin-trafficking crimes. In our plain-English reading of the document, the FBI has Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on tape connected to heroin-trafficking crimes.

Not surprisingly, the FBI goes on to specifically invoke FOIA Exemption 3 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 2510–2520, the federal law governing Title III wiretaps, to protect the identities of individuals targeted for interception and information obtained from those wiretaps. The problem with this argument is that #FOIA has limited protection for deceased persons and persons convicted of a crime. The FBI itself states on pages 19–20 of Document 100-1 that “privacy concerns are typically obviated once an individual is deceased.” We are speculating, but the only targeted person we believe is alive in that case is Nigerian President Bola #Tinubu.

We truly hope that the court puts aside the FBI’s argument and orders the release of the wiretap material. If Nigerian President Tinubu is on those wiretap tapes connected to #heroin trafficking, the American people, the @realDonaldTrump Administration, Congress, and the #Nigerian people deserve to know what those tapes contain.
