If you want to know what Europe's dependence on American tech means in practice, look at what is happening to the judges of the International Criminal Court. 👇
After the Trump administration's reckless decision to sanction the ICC, its 🇮🇹🇪🇺 Italian Vice-President, Rosario Aitala, told @Corriere what it looks like from the inside:
🔹️ Credit cards revoked
🔹️ Bank accounts closed
🔹️ Insurers refusing medical claims
🔹️ Most phone apps dead
🔹️ No booking flights or hotels online
One judge came home and said: "Alexa, play some blues."
Alexa never answered again.
Another, a European, booked a hotel in his own country through a European platform. Half an hour later, an email warned him not to try again.
"We are treated with the same methods reserved for terrorists."
European judges, on European soil, locked out of everyday life by a decision taken in Washington. Even European companies fell into line.
Today it is the judges of an international court. Tomorrow it could be any of us.
Time to cut the strings. Start by choosing European digital products. 🇪🇺

"The last thing I did is the report on Gaza naming what is happening there as genocide. One of the main reactions to that report [was] paying tribute to me for my courage.. why would you need courage to speak the truth?"
Navi Pillay upon winning the 2026 Nobel peace prize
Just finished the factchecking process for an essay on Iranian brickwork that will feature in the November edition of @thebafflermag.
It might be my favorite thing I've ever written.
The essay explores why Iran, a country dealing with so many traumas, is home to the world's most ambitious brick architecture.
Pay close attention to the commentator's remarks to fully appreciate the extraordinary performance of Iranian gymnast Mehdi Olfati at the 2026 Asian Games.
In 2023 and 2024, Yuval Abraham, the Israeli journalist and co-director of the documentary “No Other Land,” wrote a pair of articles about the high number of civilian casualties in the attacks that Israel launched in Gaza in response to Hamas’s massacre of Israelis on October 7, 2023. Now Abraham has turned his research into a film, “NAZA,” co-directed with Rachel Szor. Its title is a shorthand for the Hebrew nezek agavi, meaning “collateral damage.” Since the movie was first shown, at the Venice Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize, it has received immense pushback—much of it from journalists and officials who haven’t yet seen it.
Government officials in Israel are threatening to strip Abraham and Szor of their Israeli citizenship. Protesters outside Szor’s parents’ house have clamored for the filmmakers to be executed.
“NAZA” mostly consists of Abraham’s on-camera interviews with 24 anonymous sources who were serving or had served in military or intelligence capacities in the Gaza war. “NAZA” “turns the screen into a mirror of subjectivity, putting viewers face to face with their motives, their responsibilities, their identities,” Richard Brody writes. Canada’s PM: “Iran is one of the biggest threats in the modern world. An existential threat to Israel.”
A country that launched the war and sits on an undeclared nuclear arsenal is sold as the party in danger and the state that got hit is sold as the world’s problem🤡🤡
So @SecScottBessent is stating that he will "shut down" all Iranian airlines on September 23. What he hasn't explained is how this advances U.S. national security.
What we know is that this is an attack on Iranian healthcare supply chains.
Over 60% of Iranian medical imports arrive by air. Of this total, around one-third are “medicaments containing hormones,” a category which includes insulin for treatment of diabetes and certain cancer treatments. Just over 10% are vaccines, both for human and veterinarian use. Another 6% includes blood products used to treat infections or support clotting.
Bessent's move threatens the health of ordinary Iranians. To what end?

Seeing people from the pro-Palestine movement attacking Yuval and his new documentary about Israeli army crimes in Gaza drives me crazy.
If your response to an Israeli exposing his own country’s crimes is to attack him, something has gone seriously wrong.
