WSJ: ‘Effective Altruism’ Is Another Term for Media Bias
Is the news media manipulated? The mangy Effective Altruism movement, which went into remission when Sam Bankman-Fried went to the big house for fraud, is back. This time it’s placing journalists in newsrooms to tell us how artificial intelligence will kill us all. So much for media’s already fragile credibility.

WSJ: Have Some Manners People
Is politeness dead? On a recent flight, the woman next to me loudly dictated text messages into her phone. My normally potent stink-eye glares failed. Then I cranked Metallica’s “The Unforgiven” to 11. I could still hear her. Argh.

How the AI Boom Ends.
Look for the “Factor of 10. Current demand is gangbusters, but spending is a game of chicken until multiple factor-of-10 improvements kick in and prices collapse.

With the recent hubbub about agents escaping containers and human extinction and guardrails and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s “We must pace the frontier,” ignore the noise and filter everything through the question: Who’s liable?

I watch documentaries for sport, to try to spot bias and political messaging. Don’t trust anyone who buys film by the yard (or now gigabyte). True of “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist” on Netflix. @WSJFreeEx

The yield on 10-year Treasury bonds is dancing around 5%. It was 4% in March. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, facing higher borrowing costs, is in a quandary as to how to lower it. Roadblocks include…

WSJ: The AI Luddites Are Here
"If only Donald Trump had come out against data centers, the mood would be different. Society can put up all the Luddite roadblocks it wants, technology always finds its way around opposition."

Class warfare is in the air again—usually a sign that both sides have run out of ideas. The midterms are a battle over who is taking care of the working class. But what is “working class” anyway?

AOC’s “Woke 1 was crazy.” has the numerology wrong. It was instead Woke Zero: addictive, artificial sweetener-stuffed, anxiety-inducing absurdity (pregnant men?) that leaves you empty and rots your brains.

Four Stories, Four Lessons
I looked to my left and, shockingly, there sat Martha Stewart. I wanted to ask about her company, which recently went public, but all she talked about were flourless blueberry waffles.

Zoh-Mart would be great branding for New York’s city-run grocery stores—though they’re doomed to fail. “You’re a mayor, dude,” Sen. John Fetterman (D., Pa.) said on Newsmax, “Pick up trash. Fix some potholes.” No fun in that.

WSJ: Does AI Have a Fiduciary Duty? A 2025 OpenAI study noted 28% of AI use is for “practical guidance.” Fiduciary means a legal responsibility to act in someone else’s best interests and not for your own profit.

Politicians doing the same things—the horseshoe theory has become reality. The left and right, progressives and MAGA, bend around and almost touch. More like a teething ring, going round and round in a politician’s mouth with biting down and inflicting pain on all of us. Or an M.C. Escher drawing with everything confusingly connected. I don’t like it one bit.
