Reflections Series No 62
As a former Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation at the African Union Commission, who had the privilege of leading and coordinating the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) programme across many African countries in collaboration with key partners such as the World Food Programme (WFP), FAO, and NEPAD (now AUDA-NEPAD), I am deeply encouraged by Cameroon’s renewed engagement and unwavering commitment to this noble initiative.
During my tenure, I witnessed firsthand how HGSF transformed communities, creating strong linkages between education, nutrition, agriculture, and local enterprise development. By sourcing food locally, the programme empowered smallholder farmers—particularly women—revitalized rural economies, and kept children healthy, motivated, and focused in school. It became a living expression of Agenda 2063’s vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development — an Africa that feeds, educates, and empowers its own people.
Seeing Cameroon now take this leadership role, with the Ministry of Basic Education’s ambitious target to reach one million children by 2025, fills me with pride and optimism. This bold step demonstrates a profound understanding that school feeding is not charity—it is strategy: a long-term investment in human capital, national productivity, and the wellbeing of our children.
I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to the Government of Cameroon, the Minister of Basic Education, the World Food Programme (WFP), Nascents Solutions, the World Bank, COMNAT, and all the dedicated stakeholders for their steadfast engagement and for truly walking the talk of school feeding. Your collaboration exemplifies how national vision and global partnership can converge to transform lives.
Through your collective commitment, school feeding has evolved from a simple meal to a comprehensive development strategy—one that enhances learning outcomes, supports local agriculture, empowers communities, and strengthens resilience. The validation of the National Strategy for School Feeding further solidifies Cameroon’s alignment with continental priorities and its dedication to ensuring that no child is left behind.
Together, we are proving that when we invest in our children’s nourishment and education, we invest in the future and prosperity of our nation and our continent. I salute your dedication and encourage continued collaboration to ensure that every Cameroonian child receives both nourishment and knowledge—the true foundations of The Africa We Want.

Shocked and heartbroken by the loss of three @WFP team members in an aerial bombardment in Blue Nile State, Sudan. Any loss of life in humanitarian service is unconscionable.
Aid workers are not – and should never be – a target. #NotATarget

In East Africa, existing inequalities are getting worse as women take on more responsibilities to secure food 🌽, water 🪣and fuel.
