Absolutely shameful generalisation.

If “a few doctors” are taking referral commissions, investigate them, name them, punish them. But stop painting an entire profession as corrupt.

Doctors are assaulted, overworked, underpaid and dragged to court for complications—yet somehow Parliament finds it convenient to reduce the entire profession to “cut money.”

Fix the corrupt system. Don’t malign lakhs of honest doctors to score headlines.

Human rights violation on record at GMC , Thrissur , Keralam

Orthopaedics department of  GMC, Thrissur , Keralam confesses 10  times 24 hours duties for consecutively 3 months and even 30 / 36 hour duties on record?

How a human being will have the physical and mental capacity to do 10 times 24 hour shifts in a month and few 30 / 36 hour duties?

won't this affect the legitimate interests of patients and smooth patient care?

What is the state human right commission of Kerala & state medical council of Keralam doing?

Anyway as usual , NMC will do nothing as it washed its hands away on resident doctors duty hour issue as usual as it already put the ball on others' court.

Also this not new to Keralam. All Government medical colleges are squeezing PG students 24-36 hours and the government does nothing

Is she right? 100% I give now a proof

In a period of 5 years 276 PG students quit JIPMER mostly due to toxicity such as long duty hours, seniors bullying & unbearable workload.

But how many did complain? Do you know? Just 4 out of 276 that quit

Time has come to name and shame the bullying seniors & faculty and to make a police complaint.

78 years have passed since our freedom.

But Gen Z doctors still tolerate 36 hours slavery, verbal abuse & no week off culture by citing the same 30 years old reasons HoD is powerful & he may fail in the practicals.

99% of Gen Z doctors are not even ready to send mail to HoD demanding duty hours & a week off as per government norms which is given in the college website / brochure.

Unless & untill police complaint is made on bullying PG seniors & abusive HoD nothing will change even after 100 more years. Maybe robots will replace toxic seniors  & faculty.

Till that we would be seeing quitting & suicides.

Time has come for the parents of PG medicine students to stand with their children for their life than advising to go with the flow

PRIVATIZATION!!
If you can raise your voice against the privatization of public healthcare, now is the time.
Reports and proposals from states such as Madhya Pradesh and Bihar suggest a growing role for private companies in the management of government hospitals. While supporters argue that this may improve efficiency, many fear it could eventually make healthcare more expensive and less accessible for ordinary citizens.

We've already seen how privatization in some sectors has increased costs for consumers.

People worry that healthcare could follow a similar path, where quality treatment becomes increasingly difficult to afford for the poor and middle class..

Healthcare is not a luxury .,it's a basic right.

Any reform must ensure that affordable, quality medical care remains within reach of every citizen, not just those who can pay more.

Public healthcare should be strengthened, not made inaccessible.

You wrote it 7 YEARS AGO.
You warned that we were turning healers into scapegoats for a rotten, broken system — chronic doctor shortages, crumbling infra, unrealistic public expectations, zero political will, and brutal working conditions that no human should endure. You said society was demonising the very people sacrificing their youth to save lives.

You were RIGHT then.
You are STILL RIGHT now.
And in May 2026, the nightmare has only deepened. India has BETRAYED its doctors.

Let me lay bare the brutal, unchanged reality today:

🔥 VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC — WORSE THAN EVER
75%+ of doctors have faced assault, verbal abuse or mob attacks (IMA data still holds). Delhi alone recorded 149 incidents in govt hospitals from 2021-2025 — 49 in 2024, 48 in 2025. Fresh cases keep piling up: stabbings, beatings, rape threats, even doctors dying by suicide after horrific assaults. Mobs still storm hospitals. Convictions? Near zero. Hospitals remain killing fields for those who heal.

🔥 SOUL-CRUSHING WORKLOAD & BURNOUT
Resident doctors are STILL forced into 80-100 hour weeks, 24-36 hour continuous shifts with NO weekly off — in open defiance of the 1992 central directive. PGI-level surveys show 42% severe burnout, 30% depression. 25 resident doctors died by suicide in 2025 alone. 300 PG seats vacated in Maharashtra because the system is literally killing its juniors. Patient safety? Collapsing under exhausted hands.

🔥 ONGOING PROTESTS & DESPAIR
8,000+ junior doctors struck in Madhya Pradesh in March 2026 demanding basic stipend hikes and dignity. Nationwide strikes, hunger strikes and walkouts continue. A Central Protection of Healthcare Workers Bill was finally introduced in Rajya Sabha in Dec 2025 — proof the crisis is STILL burning after decades of pleas. Yet no enforcement, no real change.

🔥 PAPER PROGRESS, REAL ROT
On paper, doctor-patient ratio is now 1:811 (including AYUSH). Sounds great. Reality? Rural India is still abandoned. Overcrowded OPDs. Zero systemic reform. Politicians pat themselves on the back while doctors bleed.

Chetan sir, your 2019 column was a scream into the void.
Seven years later, the void has swallowed more doctors.

India does NOT deserve its doctors.
We are SACRIFICING them daily on the altar of political apathy, public ignorance and systemic greed.
The same broken system you called out is STILL chewing up our healers and spitting out their broken bodies.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Wake up, India.

Pass and ENFORCE the Protection Bill.
