The conversation below took place over a series of days, with Dr. Von Batten refusing the $3 million offer, but the individual kept coming back. The individual is well known to Dr. Von Batten, but it was the individual’s refusal to explain what such a large amount of money was for, and his refusal to explicitly state that the $3 million was not connected to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT) or the Nigerian government when asked directly by Dr. Von Batten, that raised alarm bells.

Those alarm bells were heightened when the individual sent a link to a highly encrypted app where messages apparently disappear and records of conversations may not be preserved. At that point, Dr. Von Batten decided to screenshot the conversations and contact @TheJusticeDept.

When a highly placed individual who is a dedicated member of the @OfficialAPCNg shows up, offers $3 million, and "refuses" to assure Dr. Von Batten that the offer is not connected to President #Tinubu or the Nigerian government, we can only reasonably conclude that this "may" have been an attempted bribe.

The Nigerian Presidency (@officialABAT), through Ambassador @renoomokri, wants Nigerians and journalists around the world to contact the U.S. Embassy and the @FBI about the purported embassy letter. We think this is a great idea.

To all Nigerians and reporters following the Nigerian Presidency’s suggestion, here are questions we think you should ask @USinNigeria and @FBI to get to the truth:

(1) Did Michael H. Bonner, after his retirement from the U.S. government, work as a consultant/adviser for the Nigerian government (@ndlea_nigeria) under President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT)? If so, is it commonplace for an Embassy official involved in responding to a criminal-records inquiry concerning Bola #Tinubu to later work as a consultant for the same Bola Tinubu administration?

(2) Was the Embassy letter being circulated by the Nigerian Presidency as proof that President #Tinubu was never criminally investigated by the @FBI or @DEAHQ officially approved by the U.S. Embassy? Does the Embassy stand behind the Nigerian Presidency’s interpretation of that letter, and why does the document contain numerous spelling and grammatical errors?

(3) Does the letter actually establish that President Bola #Tinubu was never investigated by the FBI or DEA, or does it merely state that an FBI/NCIC records check returned no criminal arrest records, wants, or warrants? How should that letter be reconciled with subsequent federal court records concerning FBI investigative records related to Bola Tinubu?

(4) Would an NCIC records check disclose the existence of an investigation that did not result in an NCIC arrest, wanted-person, or warrant entry?

We have a team tracking everything, and informed the @realDonaldTrump Administration the moment this article was published. We will never stand by and watch the Nigerian Presidency (@officialABAT) put the integrity and reputation of our beloved country and President into question.

In our opinion, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s desire to block the release of @FBI and @DEAHQ records and secure even a photo with President #Trump at the UN has become so great that the timing of these proposed economic agreements raises serious questions about appearances. “We Have Settled the Americans”

We have been told by highly placed Nigerians that the Nigerian Presidency (@OfficialABAT) has been bragging privately that the @FBI and @DEAHQ records will never be released and that the pushed-for meeting between President Bola Tinubu and President @realDonaldTrump at the UN General Assembly will happen because they have “settled the Americans.” We have not independently verified these statements.

“Settled the Americans” is a Nigerian expression used in this context to suggest that something of value was provided to obtain a favorable outcome. Against that backdrop, the Nigerian Presidency’s announcement of a U.S.-Nigeria minerals deal to be signed at the @UN General Assembly raises serious questions about appearances and the need to protect U.S. integrity.

After the unsolicited $3 million offer from a member of the @OfficialAPCNg who is connected to the Nigerian President #Tinubu, we believe these concerns cannot simply be dismissed. We have no evidence connecting that offer to the proposed minerals agreement. This is why we began informing the #Trump Administration last night about the serious appearance problem such a signing at the UN could create for the United States and our President.
