In an interview with MV+, Hassan Ahmed (Beybe) shares how Male City Council have started dismantling the headquarters given to the NGO in Villimale with no warning to vacate the space.

“On Friday morning, I woke up to a call from a volunteer who said Male City Council is removing the tin roofing at the workstation. I was shocked because I wasn’t given any prior warning,”

The workstation which is located adjacent to the Villingili beach was awarded to the NGO in 2012 as part of a contract with the City Council to keep the beaches of Villimale clean.

Volunteers of the NGO clean three beaches in Villimale, collecting over 6kgs from the beaches every day, Beybe said. The NGO has placed 49 dustbins in the beaches that are cleared daily.

Why on earth would anyone think that adding unnecessary complexity into the once simple process of obtaining medicine for thalassemia patients is a brilliant strategy for enhancing service efficiency?

For the past 30 years, thalassemia patients enjoyed a seamless process receiving iron chelation medicine from thal center during doctor consultations on the same floor. Given that this medication is exclusive to thals and provided by the government, there was no need for it to be available elsewhere. However, the recent decision to centralize all medicines and consumables through STO has needlessly complicated the process, burdening patients for the sake of administrative efficiency. The rationale to expedite the distribution process to the Thal center seems unwarranted, as it shouldn't compromise patient convenience. Instead of downgrading our service, addressing staff incompetence should be the focus. Moreover, forcing immune-compromised patients to queue at STO alongside those with viral infections is unacceptable.

Left with no alternative, we were compelled to voice our concerns on Twitter, given the adamant stance of both the thalassemia center's management and the state minister, who asserted that the situation could not be altered despite our earnest pleas. Therefore, we urge the government to reconsider and revert to the previous, more patient-friendly system at the Thal center.
