I’m Matt, a designer with lots of app ideas and almost no coding experience. I tried the promise everyone keeps selling. Here’s what actually happened.

I’m learning that developing an app and operating an app company are two different projects.

The code is only one part. There are also accounts, domains, emails, builds, legal documents, verification processes and many small monthly expenses.

I’m still figuring it out as I go.

I’m currently using Resend’s free plan for my apps’ transactional emails.
It’s enough during development, but real users will probably turn it into another $20/month subscription.
A free plan is great—until your product starts working.

I finally added up what I spend running my one-person app company: around $4,486 a year.
That includes hosting, domains, AI tools, app builds, developer accounts, a U.S. phone number and even a fax.
I’m still deciding which expenses are actually worth keeping.

I spend more on AI tools than on hosting, domains, email and developer accounts combined.
That wasn’t part of my original plan, but Claude and Codex are currently doing a large part of the work that would normally require a development team.
