@Blewyn@walespolecon it's just what the country is called in English. English is the native language of 90% of our country, as unfortunate as that is, and Wales as a word is a symbol of identity for a lot of people from here. I don't see a point in getting rid of it
@barbaralund@danrizzo_@gavmarten@RhunapIorwerth and the train to Cardiff from north Wales is also always packed, especially in the early mornings, your point? putting in more services wherever they can isn't a bad thing
@ClwydEnComu definitely, it'll leave people in the entire union worse off. when you divert money from helping people towards building bombs to go blow up more Palestinians, we all lose
this defense spending plan isn't sustainable without raising taxes on the rich, which labour won't do
@Ziggy_Zwela@Dunadan9 the exonym today means "Wales". even the etymology just means "non-Germanic". the slave connotation was real, but came in later and then disappeared again quite quickly.
anyway if we're gonna pick our own name in English can it PLEASE be Cambria? Cambria is a beautiful name
@tayzthecreator it'll make getting to Swansea so much easier from Bangor, rather than needing 2/3 buses and a train, you only need one bus and a train โค๏ธ we need a train line there too but this bus is most likely going to play into the business case studies for building a north south railway
@Blewyn@walespolecon Germany does use Germany in English, though, which is still an exonym. Exonyms are a natural part of language and trying to replace them is futile and performative
Pointless imo. It's our "Tรผrkyie" or "Czechia" moment. Wales does derive from "foreigner" in English, but we are foreign from the English. The English name for Wales makes sense. Do we drop Lloegr for England in Welsh? Yr Almaen for Deutchland and so on?
@InstaSim6@ClwydEnComu but we absolutely don't, is the thing. i live in Bangor. Welsh identity runs deep and Llywodraeth Cymru is very visible in our day to day lives, through transport, infrastructure, etc.. Wales is not a big country, and if we had good transport you could get to Cardiff in a few hrs
@ChickenmanuMark@plaidifanc Wales is 90.6% "White British" - though it's hard to get a good figure on what percentage is Welsh and what percentage is English. but you will generally find that if you take a random strata of Wales it'll be overwhelmingly Welsh
