We were delighted to have the Center for AstroPhysical Surveys host the Transient and Variable Universe conference last week! Watch this space for future conference announcements!
Last week we hosted the Transient and Variable Universe conference at our Center. We welcomed over 150 researchers and scientists for in-depth discussions on time domain surveys and more!
We extend a special thanks to the sponsors and organizers who helped make this possible!✨
Prof. Gautham Narayan and the SCIMMA team (@NCSAatIllinois,@LCO_Global, @penn_state, @Cornell and @UCSB) have received a $3.5M grant from the @NSF to develop the next-gen communications and computational infrastructure for time-domain & MMA! #NSFfunded
@NSF awarded $3.5M to NCSA and #SCIMMA to help better connect worldwide research groups working on multi-messenger astrophysics. This effort will allow them to communicate messages more rapidly, robustly, and in a way that both humans & machines can read.

Astronomy Illinois grad student, Melanie Archipley, does cool work. Very literally. Some pictures from her time at the South Pole working with Prof. Joaquin Vieira's group as a Center for AstroPhysical Surveys fellow.
For years, Melanie Archipley has worked with data from the #SouthPoleTelescope to enrich her astronomy research. As an NCSA CAPS Fellow, she received an opportunity of a lifetime – a trip to #Antarctica to work with the SPT in person.

Congratulations to Dr. Colin Burke, who defended his Ph.D. thesis on the "Optical variability of intermediate-mass black holes as a probe of black hole accretion and growth." Colin's work with Prof. Xin Liu and will begin as a NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale this Fall.
Congratulations to Drs. Ada Ertel, @alexgagliano, @jsvani, Jesse Miller and Samantha Thrush - our May 2023 Doctors from @AstroIllinois@UofIllinois! More pictures on Facebook or Instagram!
We're co-sponsoring a conference in June that brings together members of the astronomy community working on transient and variable science across all wavelengths to drive conversations on upcoming surveys and much more. ⏰Register by May 19!

New Paper Day! https://t.co/KHWRhnZxUv I'm especially happy to see this one out in the world both scientifically (an idea I've been trying to implement for a long time) and because it involves contributions from my new research group at UIUC!
Read about the first data release from the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE). Led by grad @PatrickAleo working w/ Prof. @gsnarayan & the Center for Astrophysical Surveys at @NCSAatIllinois, this is a major cross-institutional project witg ~2000 SNe

The deadline for Boom! has been extended to July 9th - if you did delay, still a chance to get an abstract in! We look forward to seeing everyone (virtually or in person) at the @UofIllinois in July!
Register by 25 June for a FREE workshop for scientists interested in @VRubinObs and time-domain science: "Boom! A workshop on explosive transients with LSST," held 25-29 July in Urbana-Champaign (remote participation also supported). https://t.co/m7g8niiAVu
@VRubinObs Boom! deadline was extended to July 9th to support attendees visiting from abroad who need travel clearance! We look forward to seeing you (virtually or in person) soon!
Congratulations to grad student, @alexgagliano, who won #ResearchLive at @UofIllinois! Watch his winning talk in the link below:
