In light of -
- Heatwaves
- Justice Oka asking for independent review
- Having submitted alternative alignments, proofs of compliance gaps and a review of the flawed cost benefit analysis of #mumbaicoastalroad project
- Wars, inflation, rising debt, economic slowdown... 1/2
Mumbai is at its Aravalli moment. The Aravalli intervention was one of those rare times institutions paused to prevent irreversible damage. Mumbai now finds itself at a similar crossroads, with far greater stakes given its density & economic centrality. Will we pause? 🧵
Justice Oka, who previously linked mangrove protection to fundamental rights, has termed the scale of loss “staggering” and pushed for independent scrutiny.

India's current NDC commits to adding 2.5–3 billion tonnes of carbon sinks through forests & ecosystems.
Mumbai is about to destroy 103 hectares of mangroves for a coastal road serving <5% of the city.
Respectfully sir, these two things cannot coexist. 🧵
#AfforestationGhotala: The BMC is cutting 45,000+ mangroves for the ₹22,000 crore #MumbaiCoastalRoad. To get court approval, they promised to replant 1.37 lakh mangroves as "compensatory afforestation." Satellite images and on-ground reports reveal this may be a sham. 🧵
The idea that a car-centric project like the #MumbaiCoastalRoad will fix scenes like this says less about transport planning & more about what the government assumes about the average Mumbaikar’s intelligence.

In countries with stronger institutions and more aware citizens, accountability isn’t left to a few. Here, weak enforcement means a handful carry the burden. Thanks for saying this - criticism from ‘certified bhakts’ only boosts Vanashakti’s credibility!
Headlines say the Supreme Court “upheld” the High Court but the SLP hearing was far more nuanced. Key concerns around mangroves remain. The matter isn’t over. Stay tuned :)
